Dodgeb4ya Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 KJ, These Dodge bigger series trucks came with a group 2 136-153 amp hour battery originally. IMO today's group 2's don't last more than a couple years and don't have the H-Duty long cranking power. I custom fit a Napa group 4 battery. They last 5 years or more and have ton's of cranking power. These are an industrial no nonsense GOOD quality battery! Non napa batterys are the same too. $100.00. I also have the original back up starter! Bob Quote
KJ's Dodge Posted June 13, 2009 Author Report Posted June 13, 2009 (edited) Thanks Bob, The battery that was there was a Wards Commercial 6V and I noted that the Napa 4 had a much larger CC amps than what was in the truck the last time it was ordered. They should have one in for me tomorrow. Good luck with the handcrank. Can you really turn over the engine with that? Does the engine kick like a motorcycle? I did notice my third/middle bumperet has a hole for a handcrack but I think I will stick with the starter. KJ Edited June 14, 2009 by KJ's Dodge Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Never really tried hard on the hand crank-don't want to break my arm or scratch the paint! It's very hard to turn over though! Quote
Will Y Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 It is all in how you crank the engine. I have never hand cranked my Dodge, but I have hand cranked my grandfather's 29 Chevy several times. I know it probably has a lower compression ratio but should be the same just need to pull harder. First I keep my thumb and all my fingers on the same side. With the Ignition off pull the engine over till you are coming up on the compression stroke. Then turn on the ignition and pull it over. It is certainly less nerve wracking then the first time you hand prop an airplane. That is one you don't want to mess up. Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 I use to crank my old Dodge on a fairly regular basis. Always started first or second throw of the handle. As mentioned before allways have your thumb and fingers on the same side and push with the heel of the palm. Quote
KJ's Dodge Posted June 18, 2009 Author Report Posted June 18, 2009 Just a quick update. The Carter dual carbs will be rebuilt this weekend (they are off, cleaned and on the bench. Still waiting on one of the two rebuild kit for the carbs. The new battery came in and is ready to go in. I finally got an id on the engine between the grim and rust, it looks to be a T156, so a 281. Next, gas tank will be dropped and cleaned. I will blow out the gas lines with compressed air. I will clean them out with some carb cleaner and avaition fuel as well. Thoughts on the fuel pump anyone? Getting anxious to hear it come back to life. Thanks, KJ Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 I have seen a couple of them on ebay-no one seems to know what they fit so they don`t sell. All the Moly blocks are the same pump- that is they will fit the block. Glass bowl might not be on these after market pumps- doesn't matter. KJ- I'll look on ebay to to see if I can find the one that never sells and PM you. These old pumps can have incompatible rubber in them for todays gas but so far I've been okay on that issue. KJ's Dodge Posted July 1, 2009 Author Report Posted July 1, 2009 Any one know the approximate gear ratio for my rear end for my truck B1-RA 172? Was just asked. Thankyou, KJ Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Any one know the approximate gear ratio for my rear end for my truck B1-RA 172? Was just asked.Thankyou' date=' KJ[/quote'] You probably have a 6.13-8.15 ratio. It's a H-300 double reduction 2 speed timken rear end. The ratio is stamped on the top of the rear end casing(gear set) right on a flat area. Bob Quote
