Gidday from Oz......went to a small, local swap meet today and a guy had a pair of new 30" Smithy's Mufflers for sale.........they kept calling me.......buy me.........buy me........buy me..........so i did...........now does anyone have any idea what these sound like?........, I eventually want to run a split exhaust/home brewed headers on the P11, with edgy head, twin carbs etc,ie, but essentially 3 cylinders running into a dual system front to back........my question.......are 30" long mufflers TOO long.........I don't mind a bit of noise, basically I want a hot rod sound, not a stocker, I like to piss the restorers off so noise is good............lol..........any comments?.......andyd

Hi Andy, I had dual Smitty's on a inline six Chevy engine 235...It was a nice rap pap pap when decelerating and a deep tone when in cruising speeds. I enjoy people looking around because the sound was loud. HOWEVER the LA cops do not enjoy it as much as I did and made me get rid of them. I then ran straight ten inch pipes. I thought they were loud but not too annoying. my wife even said it sounded great. so what I'm saying is try them, if you don't like them you can always trade them for something different....:)

I'm running pretty much the exhaust system you mentioned; I've got 3 into 1 cast iron headers, 2 inch pipes with no crossover, and 30 inch glasspacks. Has a nice rumble, and isn't too loud to me!

Hi Andy, I have 30" Smithy's on my p18. I'm running the set up you hope to and the mufflers sound great. A nice mellow tone a bit on the loud side but not annoyingly so.

Andy-

Can't remember off the top what length my smithys are,

More here...

I have a cross-over just ahead of the mufflers, so it mellows the tone quite a bit.

Pete

I should have mentioned that my system also has a cross-over ahead of the mufflers to mellow out the sound. My car sounds much like blueskies does in his clip.

Yep, thats just what I want.........VARROOM......lol.........only hiccup I'm gunna have is the exhaust manifold as I've mentioned the P11 steering box lives where a front Fenton header would sit, so I've got a new new set of extractors/headers of a 302 Ford that have nice mandrel bends and only 1&3/8th primary pipes and am gunna chop these up and make a set of headers that hopefully will fit.......many thanks for the info and sound......andyd
