John Mulders Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 Whil I have everything open I also think of touching up the steering wheel. Now I think I remember that you would need a puller for this? How would this be removed? - remove the ring (done) - remove the three screws that hold down the horn how easy is it to remove the wire? Do you need to remove it from the steering column? - remove the steeringwheel nut and pull ? If it is too difficult I can do the repair of the cracks and the paint in the car with the steering wheel on. Think that best result will be with the wheel off though. Any suggestions appreciated! Allan Faust Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 John, The wire goes through the column and out the bottom, so you don't remove it. Just remove the nut, and use a puller to remove the steering wheel.... I tried without, and couldn't.... (risked breaking it further). Allan Quote
John Mulders Posted December 25, 2006 Author Report Posted December 25, 2006 Allen, thanks for the quick reply, but if the wire goes all the way to the bottom how do I remove the wheel if the wire goes through the T-shaped holder and that won't fit through the steeringwheel hole? John Quote
Lou Earle Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 I removed the 3 screw on the T in your picture- went under the car and cut the wire and pulled out fron top but wait!!!- tape a piece of string to the cut wire and pull it thru as u remove the old wire. Then re do wire any way you want - you can see it is just wire soldered to the T. Then when doen attach the new wire to the string and pull it thru. I ran a threaded rod thru the wheel itself and ran fender washers and nuts onto it so I had a handle to word with when I painted my 48 dodge wheel. Lou Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 The wire unplugs at the bottom...it is easy to remove and re-install the wire..I have done so a number of times..be careful however as the rubber may be brittle..if this is the case I would recommmend replacing with a heavy teflon coated wire..the teflon covers allows for a very slick stiff wire to work with..you can drop a small nail through the hole with a string attached to help fish thorugh if needed..use air pressure to blow the nail through...
