socalkevin07 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 ok been trying to start my new engine for a week or so.. new problem: there is power to the coil from my ignition switch....but when i turn on key and crank engine there is no spark coming from coil wire..(took wire off and held close to enine ground).... I'm assuming this is why it wont start....Coil is new.. any ideas? Oh also...I have about 6 gallons of gas in tank...how long should i have to crank before gas gets into the fuel pump glass bowl...and carb? thanks Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 It may take a while to prime up your fuel system. It may help to connect a temp gas container up close to the fuel pump to get it primed quicker. Once there is fuel in the pump and line to the carb it'll be able to draw fuel from the tank easier. On your spark issue, check the wire from the coil to the distributor to be sure it's not shorted out or broken. Also, check the little wire inside the dist that goes to the points. They will short out or break at times as well. Then check the points to be sure that they are opening and closing. The points must provide a path to ground for the coil. This charges up the coil. When the points open the magnetic field in the coil collapses and induces the high voltage spark. Merle Quote
Allen I. Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 I have had similar problems in the past. I have some mechanical knowledge and pick up tons of stuff around here all the time. Two years ago, I found that the points can be very touchy so make sure they are gapped correctly. I had a problem with the set screw in the dizzy and the gap kept shifting on me. As Merle said, check all the little wires in the dizzy as they can wear and kill you. Nothing like a $.98 part stopping you in your tracks. This year I had a fuel issue in the spring and could not seem to get fuel to the carb. I thought the fuel pump was shot but on the advice of someone (sorry I forgot who it was) I attached a fuel line to a temporary tank that has the squeezy ball on it to force the gas through the pump. Apparently the diaphram in the fuel pump can get "stuck" and fuel can loosen it up. You could also have a bad coil ... I know you say it is new but stranger things have happened. Quote
chucky07 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 thanks for your input guys much appreciated...Grey Beard helped me out..and now it fires right up.... When i installed my 6 volt alt..the directions did not say to switch the coil wires around...WEll once I did..fired right up....I'm learning as i go... Quote
