Source for new or rearched rear P15 springs?

I called a local spring place today and asked about replacement springs

for 46-48 Plymouths. The man was friendly and somewhat helpful.

Says he can re-arch old springs. May be able to make some leaves,

but may not be able to make a complete set.

I asked if I could come visit with him further on the topic, and he said

that would be fine. He would need to know how many leaves and the

length of each plus the width.

I can't recall if it specifies in the parts manual that information.

Anyone have that handy? I'm at work right now and can't look for

it. Also, I think my convert may have one more leaf than a sedan

or coupe. The preliminary prices he gave seem reasonable.

Guys,I know all about those places,but can't afford them. The J.C. Whitney springs are identical to the factory springs,and we are talking about getting bot sides for around $225 including shipping.

I will probably end up putting on a set of old air shocks to get me buy until the Whitney springs get to me. Latest update is they will be shipping on 20 November. We'll see.

The catalog I have is a few years old, but it lists:

"Plymouth 1940-'52- leaf springs, per pair: $240 - $280

As for Eaton-Detroit, I recall going to them about 10 years ago, looking for new front coils for my '48 New Yorker, and they "didn't have them" and didn't want to talk about it... perhaps I caught them on a bad day ?

Local spring shops always told me that they could "fab-up any leaf except the main leaf (couldn't create the eye)", and always offered to "re-arch and add a leaf"... I had this done on a couple of trucks, and one or two cars, and was never really happy with the result; my biggest issue was how that extra leaf altered the ride characterisitic, especially on a passenger car.

I ordered the JC Whitney leaf springs 07/22/2008 and they arrived 09/30/2008. So almost 2 months. During that time I went crazy because the estimated time bounced around worse than a car with busted leaf springs! I read some other posts that said when their order would get cancelled they would reorder, then they received them right away. Stick with it, jump the hoops, it's worth it.

I also had a local shop add a new leaf to my P-15 rear springs. Like you I was

not happy with the results. So I bought new springs from Espo. Believe the

cost was around four hundred bucks delivered. It has been close to two

years agoso I dont have exact figures but I know the catalogue price you

posted is way off of todays numbers. Here is what the extra leaf cost me.

NO Don, All they do is slight bends. Turn your springs upside down on the floor and measure from the floor to the centering bolt. now put them in your press and make several very slight bends and remeasure. If your measurment is 1" less you have lowered your car 1". You can go up by reversing them in the press.

Thanks for the heads up. I sent them a email yesterday,and got a response today. They want $330 for a set of rear springs for my P-15,plus shipping. I just may buy from them if J.C.Whitney doesn't come through in the next couple of months. Still,the Whitney springs were about $230 including shipping. That kind of savings makes them worth waiting for for me because i won't be driving in much before next spring. I plan on swapping the worn out engine and trans this winter for rebuilt ones anyhow. Not to mention recessing the firewall,adding AC,a new radiator with ac condensor and tranny cooler,new wiring harness,new paint,etc,etc,etc.

No,it doesn't really look that good. That was two years ago. It's going to look just like that when I'm done,though. The difference is there won't be any rust bubbling through the paint,no cracked glasses,no rusty chrome,and it will be dependable to drive anywhere.

ARRRGGGHHHHH! I hate you! My initial order was about a week after yours! Since there can't be that many people ordering them,your's must have been the last order filled from the production already on hand. At first they said they would be available on 8/26,then 9/26,then 10/26,then they canceled my order

I thought the re-arch procedure required heat treatment.

It does. The springs have to be annealed first,bent to the correct dimensions,and then heat treated.

Guys,good news! And bad news.

The good news is that I got a email in this morning from J.C.Whitney telling me they had shipped my springs on 21 Nov.

The bad news is they charged me $104.99 too much. It says right on the shipping invoice they sent me that the total cost for both springs was $203.98,plus $23.98 for shipping. Yet they charged me a total of $332.95.

I have been waiting over 6 months now for a overcharge refund from Harbor Freight Salvage. I hope I don't have this problem with Whitney. I have already sent them a email using my order number to ask them for a refund of the overcharge. Now we will see what happens with that.

Knuckle......how did you get to use Chevy wheels on the Plymouth??

The car has a 78 Camaro front frame clip and rear end.
