I am wrestling with a most difficult problem. My cowl vent is installed in accordance wtth the stackup drawing on page 23-14 in the 49/53 parts manual. Shouldered bolts are both in place and vent assembly hinges fine, but the cover is nearly half an inch too far forward - rear edge does not even touch the gasket on the cowl.

I have studied the stackup of the assembly, and cannot think of any other way by which this unit can be assembled. After all, it's just two pieces - the covef and the hinge, with two bolts as pivot points.

Is it possible someone in the past used wrong parts? The assembly was so gummed up with foam weatherstrip and cement it was difficult to see how it fit originally. Could the cab pivot points be somehow moved forward? This shoulx be a simple no-brainer, but I'vd spen sevefal hours on this problem and am no closer to a solution then before I started.

Mabye it's because I (gulp) fit so well under thiss Piloothouse dash . . . . . .

Anyone encounter such a problem? Any suggestions? Kick, punt, pass?

Your wisdom is coveted. :)

Thanks

I Had The Same Problem On Mine. Reguardless Of What I Tried It Wouldn't Even Come Close To Closing Correctly. I Finally Set It In Place And Used A Turnbuckle To Winch It Shut For Good. I Installed A/c And Didn't Really Plan To Use It Anyway.

How about the 5 screws from the top outside which holds the cover on to the pivot assembly. If you loosen those up, you can slide the cover up and down to change the position. Mine doesn't open far enough and I know that I need to get up there to make that adjustment.

Dennis,

There are four screws that come from the front toward the rear of the cah when the vent is closed. This is where the up-down adjustment is made to put pressure on the gasket to stop leaks, but I cannot see how this would help me adjust the thing rearward, colser to the windshield, which is what it seems to need.

Noticed also since my first post that the passanger side is worse than the driver's side. Mebby someone put their fuut against this thing and put lots of pressure on it trying to stop a bad leak. Who knows what previous owners have done to the poor thing in the past sixty years.

Try as I might, I can find no adjustment for fore-aft on the lid that contacts the gasket. Surely there must be one somewhere.

Thanks for your ideas . . .

Dave,

As I recall the bracket that attaches to the cab with the sholder bolts (where it pivots) is also screwed to the vent door with a few screws. You may be able to loosen those and adjust your vent for and aft. Also, the pivot bolts at the ends are in slotted holes. Try loosening them up a bit and see if it'll slide around into place. Mine didn't line up right at first either. I loosened up all the screws and wiggled it into place, then tightened up all the screws again. I also found it beneficial to have the speedo and speaker grill removed so that I could reach through those holes to get at everything.

GB-I think if you get the "rough adjustment" taken care of by moving the C shaped bracket close to where you want it and tighten down the screws you can get the final tweaking with the concentrics on the shoulder bolts. I did mine a long time ago-but that's kinda what I remember. I also did a swap in of a new cover as the original had quite a dent in it and I don't recall doing a log of fiddling around to get it where I wanted it. Mike

grey beard,

It's been a while but I had to set cowl vent on correctly then from underneath dash fussed with brackets to get proper position before I got it right. Just a suggestion. Just use painters tape so not to damage paint finish to hold down vent. That way you can see if brackets go on this side or that side of mounting holes.
