How do you verify that the engine is the original? I have a 57 D200 with the flat head 6, I believe it's original but would like to verify. Thanks...Dave

No business coupe, but a 36 4 door, chassis and body if you are interested?..Dave -
This the rear bumbler I have on my 57. It is mounted with 3" channel iron that bolts on the outsides of the rails.

Well, all those are possible. But I think a rebuild this winter on the 3 speed is in order. Maybe some day a new rear axle, but not now. The wheel chocks are a great option, I have a good rubber one already. Don't forget turning the wheels into the curb. On another post I wrote about the steering at 50 mph, new tires up front have made a ton of difference. I can feel comfortable Now at 55 mph, that's all I need. Dave

Cool! I should be able to find an S10 tranny easy enough, look into a kit. But, man, what do I do about an e brake? I don't think the existing rear brakes could be modified to serve as e brakes. Any ideas on this line of thought?
-
Yep, that's what I figured, any over drives out there? If they are not available then I will look at the rebuild on the 3 speed or put a top loaded 4 speed if I find one.

I have a 57 D200, 3/4 ton, with a flathead 6 and 3 speed on the column. 2nd gear is giving some trouble, synchros need to be replaced, but I'm doing ok by revving up when down shifting. Works good most of the time, thanks to this forum for recommending that and describing step by step how to do it. I can pull the gear box and replace the synchro, but I'd like to look into putting in a 4 speed, if the final drive is lower. Are the 4 speed boxes lower or are they the same as the 3's? I'd like to get the rpm's down when going 50 on the highway, is overdrive an option? Thanks for the help...Dave

I went to a cruise night here in my town, met a bunch of nice guys. Only truck there, mostly hot rods and muscle cars. Funniest thing was this one guy who hung around for a while, really liked the truck, said I needed to Armourall the tires and could not believe I used the truck to do work. Had to show him the scratches in the bed and tailgate. Kept shaking his head. I'm gonna look for some truck club events, I want to meet others with these great old Dodges.

The rims are 6 lug, Budd type. I am not sure about drop center, what is that? The rims are in very good shape and the tires are good to new. Obsolete? Well yes they are but they work and I want to keep the truck as original as I can, and I believe they are original. If I wanted to be more "modern" I would get rid of the wheels, brakes, steering, etc. not what I want, I like obsolete...Dave

Are they 8 x 17.5. I have looked around and they seem hard to find and are $$$
-
Wondering what size tires your trucks have. My 57 200 har 8 x 17.5 tires. Radials on the rear and very old bias ply on the front, came that way and I just getting to replacing them. Drives terrible if I go over 45. I am looking to put radials on the front to get it right. Do you guys use radials?
-
Jerry, you are right, the truck came with two bias ply tires on the rear and radials on the front. I think that is the problem. I don't get on the highway often but I will change over to all radials soon and see.
-
I agree with Merle on several of his suggestions. I have a 57 3/4 ton with the flathead six and 3 speed on the column. All stock except for a new radio and heater. The steering is difficult while not moving and a little lively at highway (50) speeds, but I don't get on the interstate too often. Brakes are tough, she will need to stand on them to stop short.. I want to keep mine as much original As I can, but if my daughter was driving it, she is 5' 3" and 110 pounds, l would do the brakes and steering. The engine is great, very good starting and runs perfect. Get her a good radio and seat belts with the shoulder belt. I think the clear coat over the patina is cool. Have fun with your project, your daughter will never forget it....Dave

I learned double clutch on old fire trucks, 1960's, but haven't done it for at least thirty years. What I remember is: depress clutch, pull shift lever out of gear into neutral, let clutch pedal up then depress again and shift into the new gear. Am I missing anything? I always shift fairly early from 1st to 2nd before going into 3rd, slow speed, I'll have to pay more attention to the speed, maybe 30 or less as I put into 3rd. I really baby the truck, I don't think my methods are at fault here, more likely the synchronizers are bad as some have indicated here. Does anyone know if a 3 sp gear box from a 1936 Dodge sedan might fit this truck?
