  1. Tim, you're right. There's no release mechanism. It comes out from the front. My knob has the metal clip in it as yours does. However, I couldn't move it as you suggested. So, I forced it open, chipping the knob a little. A half inch metal clip came out. Oh well, I guess I just have push it back into the knob, and then over the shaft of the new switch I'm ordering. Thanks for your info, that did the trick. Ed P.
  2. You guys are too nice. Well, as it turned out, I got the switch out. I figured it had to come out from the front taking off the knob. But intstead of a set screw, there is a spring type clip. That was a pain to do. The manual says to just "lift up the special clip in the knob". Ha, easier said than done. The clip completely surrounds the shaft, so lifting it up didn't move anything. So, I used force to pry the darn thing off, and in the process, chipping some pieces off the knob, and out it came with a half inch long metal clip. The knob doesn't look too bad with the missing chips. Anyhow, thanks again for your input.
  3. I'm carrying over from my other thread about parking lights. And Niel said how to remove the headlite switch, by pushing in a button that's on the back of the switch and pulling out the shaft from the front. Well, I can't seem to get behind there with my big fingers, and I tried using a screwdriver. Now, this button, what exactly is it? Is it the round ring that butts up against the switch? If it is, I can't see how one can possibly push it in all around evenly to accomplish the job. I'm probably missing something here. Oh, as an afterthought, on another thread of mine I mentioned about a better service manual book than the one that's currently popular. That book would go into detail about how to remove a headlite switch, wouldn't it? With pictures as a bonus. Ed P.
  4. Yes, I have one of those probes. Well, believe it or not, I got juice to the parking lite contact near the radiator. And, then, darn, I lost it. It must be the headlite switch connection. I found which one it was on the headlite switch, pulled it out, cleaned it, pushed it back in as tight as I could, then went to the front, put probe on the top wire, and it lit. Wow. Happy days. Then, I hooked up one of the parking lites, and it wouldn't light. Parking light is O.K., I checked it out first with a jumper wire to battery. So, I put probe back on the top wire connection, like I did the first time when it worked, but this time no light. The wire is good all the back to the headlite switch, which, by the way, I have to jiggle to make it work, even for the regular hi-lo beams. Therfore, am I correct in assuming it must be the switch itself? And if it is, how do you take it out? I tried to pull the front knob off, it won't budge. Ed P.
  5. O.K. I guess I'll have to live with this manual. As for the parts, there's that site that Chetscoins posted that has all the parts and numbers. That's really fantastic. Ed P.
  6. I have this Plymouth Service Manual I bought on e-bay. It covers models from 1946 to 1954. I don't get enough information from it for my 47 Plymouth. There must be a more complete manual out there that specifically addresses only the P-15. Any suggestions? Ed P.
  7. Thanks guys for info. Rockwood, I like your schematic. A little different from what I have that's in the Plymouth Service Manual. Do you think, maybe, the switch on the dash is defective? The headlites work, but not the parking lites when I pull it out for the first detent. The wires seem to be in good condition. Ed P.
  8. 1983 Olds Delta 88, the last of the biggies. Ed P.
  9. On the topmost connection, what is that single white wire? It runs back into the engine compartment with the rest of the headlite wires. My hi and lo beam lites work fine. No problem there. The wiring diagram shows 2 wires leading from the parking lites back to the board. I have just one for each lite leading back to the top connection. On the headlite switch on the dash, where is the parking lite connection? Here is a rough pic of the diagram of the switch looking down from the top. What wires do what? Ed P.
  10. On my 47 Plymouth, I'm confused as to the front parking light connections set-up. The control board on the front near the radiator show 3 spots for the wires for the headlites & parking lites. Yet, in the wiring diagram for the P-15, it shows a different set-up. The pic I'm sending shows what my set-up looks like before I spliced in new wires. The top spot has one wire (whitish in color) that goes back into the engine. Two wires on top of that wire(I took them off to redo) led to the left & right parking lites. The middle and bottom spots have the lo and hi beam wires leading to the headlites. The middle also has a black wire that goes back into the engine, and the bottom has a red wire that goes back also into the engine compartment. What exactly do these wires do? (I know one has to be the hot wire). So, how can I get the parking lites to work? Ed P.
  11. My 47 Plymouth coupe was repainted by previous owner in the original Balfour Green color. The inside of trunk was dark green. I like to call it dark emerald green. Ed P.
  12. David, how do you download info from the "links section of this site"? concerning Gerald's file. I'm not very computer savvy. Ed P.
  13. Thanks guys for input. Seems like the gasket over the carb is the easiest and cheapest way to go. Ed P.
  14. Well, I finally got it right. Switch works fine. I had the power connection mixed up with the lo-beam one. When I got the switch from Andy Bernbaum, the bottom contact seemed to be the power one, as it looked like it was on my old one. But it wasn't, the middle one was the power, the bottom, the lo-beam. Anyway, I have a habit of making a short story, long. So, "all's well that ends well" . Ed P.
  15. Dave, can you supply more information on how you did the wiring for the directional signals? Or what kit, if any you bought? I want to attempt this project, but am leery of my ability to do it. I really need a step-by-step procedure on how to do it, and what supplies I need. Thanks, Ed P.
  16. O.K., Now, Shelbizzy shows a gasket that fits over the top of carb. Jerry says his is inside of clamp. The surviving piece of my old gasket seems to fit inside the clamp, in the indented ring that goes around. Appears to be about an eigth of an inch thick. I guess having this set-up would negate the use of the outside gasket over the carb. Ed P.
  17. Thanks guys, those two pics of switch looks different from what I have. Who manufactured those. I guess it doen't make any difference, since they all work the same way. But I'm curious as to price compared to what I paid, $22.00. Anyhow, I'll go underneath to check the positioning again. I think that might be the problem. Ed P.
  18. How is the air cleaner supposed to sit on top of carberator on my 47 Plymouth. When I took it off months ago to spruce it up, a gasket crumbled out, around the clamp, I think. Does that clamp supposed to have a gasket running along the inside of it? I can clamp it on without the gasket, I suppose. It's difficult to try and see underneath when I put it on. Ed P.
  19. I'm baaack, again, Central52. Well, I hooked up the mech. switch. Connected the wires to switch. No sparking, no shorting. Fine, so far. I look back at trunk brake lite, and it's on. I press the brake pedal, and it's still on. I check underneath to see how the pivot arm is set, and it appears it's correctly positioned. It's pushed in when pedal is up, and when I push pedal down, it opens up. Is the switch defective, or I missed something hooking it up? Ed P.
  20. Looling at that Sorenson dimmer switch. It has 3 connections. My old dimmer switch had 4 connections. How would they hook up, what wire goes where? Ed P.
  21. Interesting about movies with old cars. I just saw a movie about Jake Lamotta, the boxer. In one scene there was what looked like a 4l Packard, and a 4l Plymouth in the background. Which got me to thinking. Is there a movie clearinghouse where one can write to about seeing if a production company can use old cars in movies? Ed P.
  22. I just saw on e-bay a pair of kick panels configured for the dual heater set-up. Looks to be in fairly good shape. Ed P.
  23. Steve, when you say "double filament", does that mean just the bulb itself, not the wire and socket that it's in? And as for the 7 wire type, any such kit as advertised on e-bay or sold elsewhere will do the trick? I appreciate your input. Thanks, Ed P.
  24. Darn, I got mine from Andy Bernbaum, ($20.00). I wish I had known about Sorenson. Do they also sell other parts for old Plymouths. What's their website? Ed P.
  25. I did what was suggested. Touched the two brake wires together, and, lo and behold, the trunk brake lite went on. So, I'm assuming there was no way I could have ruined the mechanical switch, when I originally shorted something out. It's freezing outside now, and I'm going to wait a day or two before I go underneath car to connect those wires to switch. As for the other question about directional signals, I don't have them, but would like to put them on, using the front parking lites for the front signals, and the rear tail-lites for the back ones. Since I have the trunk brake lite, I will keep it as such, and not complicate the set-up with the two rear tail lites. Any suggestions as to where I can get a SIMPLE kit to do this? Ed P.
