  3. Update: compression check, okay. Leakdown test, okay. I spun engine by hand and carefully watched each lifter. They are all travelling fully. I did find one valve way out of adjustment - thanks to Keith's videos. So, false alarm all around, but thanks to the wisdom of this group I learned alot. I think the engine is pretty tired, but there's no damage.

  5. I love your optimism. With the valve covers off, and the engine running, to my eye it looked like the #5 exhaust tappet was moving half the distance it should. To me it was not moving "up" far enough - I thought the only explanation could be the cam lobe is gone, or else the tappet would move. If the cam were good, wouldn't it move the tappet? I could see if a tappet was stuck up, bit mine is down and not traveling...
  6. Motor mostly sat for 50 years. I've been driving for two summers and for the first time looked at the valves. Maybe some sludge caused the wear. 58k original miles. I bet she'll still cruise around town for another 80 years, but 55mph is no longer happening.

  8. That makes sense. The same valve has leaky guides too and that condition is worsening quickly too. I did a long run at 55mph on a hot day, probably about 90minutes and I could tell something wasn't quite right. I bet the hardening was compromised and the long run wore it down. Thanks for confirming. I'll do compression test before I commit to rebuild.
  9. The lift isn't nearly correct via eyeball instrument test. It moves about half of what it should. I was hoping it could be something else other than a bad cam. Can a lifter be cupped that badly?
  10. Hi all: while adjusting valves I noticed intake on #5, the tappet doesn't travel as much as the others, if at all. Am I looking at a bad cam lobe, or could the valve stem just be stuck? Thanks!
  11. Search YouTube for Keith's Garage - he shows how to fabricate your own brake tool and I find it superior to the Aamco tool (I have both). One other random tip: make sure the brake pedal rod, where it enters the master cylinder, is properly adjusted. If it's not, you'll never get the brakes adjusted properly...
  12. Bermbaum in Newton MA and Roberts Auto Parts in Newbury MA are the best go-to parts suppliers. Stay away from Moparpro in NJ.... If you join the various Facebook groups, more often than not, someone will have extras of the parts you need.
  13. If you get one shoe to just barely touch the drum via the minor adjustment, then you use that shoe as a reference point. You take the drum off and use the tool to adjust both shoes so they are concentric with the drum - the same bit of clearance as you spin the pointer of the tool across the surface of both shoes. I found that after 500 miles or more of driving, my brakes got better - the shoes will start to form to any irregularities in each drum. Readjust at that point.

I'm guessing 8 fresh leaves and new shackles will perform alot better than the current setup. Other than cutting the old rusty hardware out, anything I should be aware of replacing everything? Thanks!!
  16. I have the legit AAMCO tool - and I can tell you, Keith's homemade tool is easier to use. Just some threaded rod, some hardware, and a metal pointer of some sort. It allows more control. The AAMCO tool kind of "builds in" the clearances automatically. Keith's tool allows for more control.
  17. I see 10 leaves - I wonder how much of a difference an 8-leaf pack would make, the same that was used on sedans?
  18. I'll count them up tomorrow, but I'm certain the leaf springs are original. My wagon has shocks as well in the rear but those are recently replaced. This vehicle was never restored.
  19. Beautiful. Maybe you can see the sag in this Pic - the rear end is level with the front, no rake at all.   20. Thanks Bob. Any particular difficulty installing them? I'll guessing you get some good travel when you push on the rear bumper? Any pics of your wagon from the side so I can see the proper height on the rear end with fresh springs? Thanks!
  21. Hi all: my 41 wagon seems to sag a bit in the rear, and there's no movement at all when you bounce the rear bumper. I'm guessing the leaf springs or shackles or both are worn out. Any tips and tricks to replacing?
  22. I had the same symptoms. It turned out the coil was slowly failing. Plus, a bit of vapor lock - I changed coil and wrapped fuel line that runs near the manifolds with insulation designed for fuel lines. Problem solved.
