Freds 55 Fargo Goes Dual Carb and Exhaust Build

In this sport its funny how many times ones path crosses with a kindred spirit, This blog entry is of just such a person, whose daily driver, and I do mean year around daily driver, got another performance improvement. Not its first and not its last.

 

Proud to have a good friend of the AoK boys document his baby's latest performance update.

 

Here we go - As Fred started out -

 


"Hey all, had a suspicious package arrive today at the local Canada Post Office inside the General Store.
Much to my thrill, a AoK Asche Dual Intake/exhaust, BBI carbs, and a A833 adpater plate was in the box, T5ers eat your hearts out..
Now the big plan for phase 1, pull stock manifolds, clean up engine paint and make all nice and purdy.
The new duals will be installed, with George Asche carbs and linkage, these are the large cfm truck carbs too.
Hope to get a lot more punch out this old 238 engine, gonna be kool.
The A 833 trans, have 1 in the wings, not sure how well it will be with my current 3.23 gears, but do think it should be just fine.
I am not sure if I will be pulling the head, and having it shaved, but that is a possibility.
The final plan at some future point is the ultimate 265 hot cam, shaved head, will definitely push this little old Fargo along real nicely...."

Going to be nice Fred, that intake/exhaust set-up looks great. I have a rebuilt A833, received my AoK trans adapter a couple weeks ago, and on the hunt for a Jeep rear end....for better gearing and e-brake.

Hey DB, can hardly wait, I have no idea what to expect, but I know I will like what I get.

I have had a look at the engine, all the manifold stud nuts, unturn easily, ( was swapped 2 years ago) that's the good news. The bad news is 2 studs are backing out, meaning I have to drain the antifreeze.

I have a great aluminum fuel block that I am coupling with a Carter glass bowl fuel filter, this will be mounted on the firewall, fuel hose from pump to fuel block and fuel hose from the block to the carbs.

 

 

I am going to pick up a new gasket set and some supplies this week, and hopefully get started, I will be doing everything except the 2nd exhaust run.

Deathbound, I am looking forward to your A833 swap, think you will really enjoy it, make for faster cruising, nice shifting etc. I intend to also do this swap at some future point.

Yes those are truck items. Standard issue on trucks, and on factory dual intake and exhaust equipped trucks they actually came with two different versions. A slightly smaller profile on the back and a bigger one on the front. Ton of guys try and match the two up and then cant figure why the bigger one wont fit inbetween carbs.
 
Attached is a prime example of a truck that was purchased by the Gravenhurst Municiplaity in Ontario Canada to be a winter plow and salt truck, and in the summer a road dump truck.  When we got it, it
came with maybe the most complete documentation I have ever seen. With over 350,000 miles they documented its maintenance right down to spring bolts and seat repairs.   Heck they even replaced 4 air cleaner wing nuts over its time in service, that I am sure got dropped on the shop floor and they just put on new ones, but the cool factor is they documented absolutely everything. 2 binders of maintenance records
so I am very comfortable in calling it accurate.
 
That side track aside,  do we need to find you 1 or 3 for the  vintage look Plymouth for you ?

very cool truck, Tim! it's always great to see a documention done well,

personally i'm not too good at it but my dad can calculate the cost of his 140 series volvo

to the very last cent over the last 45 years. lot's of work...

 

i was talking about that neat little glas bowl fuel filter Fred is installing.

already on the hunt in my stash, i must have one or two of those and forgot about them...

air cleaners from your dodge are cool, too, but we better stick to the plan ;)

 

Fred, pulling the head is just a little step further if you're draining the coolant anyway,

and would give you the opportunity to check the valve seats and maybe do a quick regrind.

that sure made mine run a lot better when we put the triple intake on in 2010/11...

Very cool.. Those dual carb truck airfilters..  Not only are they impossible to find, you would be blown away what they are worth. The good news for you, even if you won the lottery and could find them, you cant put them on a triple intake. There is no room. They are 7" wide.

Hi Tim, when I go  to install the manifold set, should I loosen the intake from the exhaust, as the same on a bone stock on install, torque intake and exhaust first, then tighten the 4 bolts attaching the 2 sections?

I may take a run at this tomorrow, drop antifreeze and pull manifolds and get this party started.....LOL

So today drained all the coolant as a few studs were backing out.

I removed all stud nuts, and the 4 studs that backed out, cleaned up all the threads, special washers etc.

I had to use heat for some of the stubborn stud nuts, but came off well, once persuaded.

I then cleaned up the block are and installed the 4 studs, and the gaskets, it was time to try on the new intake and exhaust, they fit like a glove.

So with new gaskets in place, the intake and exhaust installed, and stud nuts torqued down.

It was now time to run fuel lines, hook up the gas pedal and choke linkages, all went off well, at least I am hoping it did.

Buttoned it all up, added the antifreeze, and tomorrow will hook up the 1 exhaust pipe, and very soon will get a 2nd exhaust for the front exhaust outlet.

I hope it runs as well as it looks, and need to find air cleaners too.

Looking sharp!

The pics remind me i have to come up with a solution for my chocke cable... note to self... ;)

Easy as  pie as my grandfather would say.  
 
Yours are set up to run one cable right through all three carbs and choke them all equally..  You only really need to choke 1 but hey.. I like to treat everyone equally..
