Does anyone know where I can get the fiberous gasket that goes on the distributor shaft where it enters the block?? Also, I just got my engine back from the rebuilder and I have almost all of the parts back on it. I turned the crank to get the # 1 cylinder to TDC then slid the distributor in to check the to see if the rotor lines up at 7 oclock. It lines up at 10 oclock?? So I guess when I put the plug wires on I should put the #1 in the cap at the 10 oclock position and continue around the cap from there. Right?? Thanks

Did you make sure both the exhaust and intake valves on the #1 cyl are both closed? If not you may be 360 out of time. #1 can only fire when both valves are closed. When you get TDC and install the dist-you can start at the nearest position of the rotor and proceed clockwise w 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order. Mike

Yes, both valves were closed. Thanks for the information about starting where the rotor is pointing -- that's what I tought. How about that gasket - I don't remember seeing one on the distributor shaft of my parts motor, but I definately found part of one when I went to install the one for this motor today.

A suitably sized rubber O ring will work for the dizzy gasket. I replaced my cork one with an oring and it just fine. There is no pressure there so leakage isn't a problem. Probably does more to keep dirty air out of the crankcase than to keep oil in.

Also 10 isn't that far from 7, there is on the bottom of the dist another sloted retainer that will give you some more adjustment than the hold down. You might wanna check that before changing your wiring around.

Yallll gotta' remember that what determines where the distributor will go into the block is the position you first turned the OIL PUMP SHAFT.

What, you say, you didn't remember to index the oil pump shaft correctly? Well, pilgrim, that there's the reason why it slides in at ten o'clock instead of the usual and customary seven o'clock position.

But then we all know they can be tinkered up to run with numhber one in any position. It's just that if you get it right, then next guy won't have to scratch his head and guess about where number one really is on any particular vehicle. JMHO

Good Luck:)

Thanks, I'll pick one up in the morning.
