oldmopar Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 These are the red and green felt washers. It sounded like a good idea and I put a set on the Plymouth. Its been about 2 months since I last drove the car. I just looked under the hood and the battery terminals where covered with white powder also the battery hold down. I have a original metal type that surrounds the battery. This just does not look right I thought these things prevent corrosion. Well maybe they do as the battery connection was clean but everything else was a mess. The mess cleaned up with some water but just wondering is this how these things work Quote
dirty dan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 I've used them for years and never had that problem. Of course, I also use the CRC terminal protectant spray in addition. One sure cause of corrosion is a poor electrical connection somewhere within the battery charging system. http://automotivefasteners.thomasnet.com/item/industrial-supplies-cleaners/crc-battery-terminal-protector/05046?&forward=1 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Nope, I've never tried those rings....have seen them for sale. Normally don't have much corrosion. I don't even have a hold down on the battery.....just kept in place by the cables. Quote
oldmopar Posted July 18, 2008 Author Report Posted July 18, 2008 I had much more corrosion with the washers then without ? The wiring is all new replaced it over the winter and battery still had a good charge. Dan I rember using that crc spray years ago i had forgot about it I think I will look for a can next week Ed Quote

Dan I rember using that crc spray years ago i had forgot about it I think I will look for a can next week Ed Every time I've had corrosion problems in the past, I've always found something that wasn't as tight as I thought I left it. For some reason I never seem to be able to tighten my starter lead properly the first time. That CRC spray works great and I highly recommend it. Quote
oldmopar Posted July 18, 2008 Author Report Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks and I will double check those connections Ed Quote
Normspeed Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 I had much more corrosion with the washers then without ? Ed Ed, sounds like you installed them upside down. Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Ed, sounds like you installed them upside down. Yeah.....don't do what I did once. I accidentally put the green washer on the + post. Man ya shoulda seen the sparks fly. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Yeah.....don't do what I did once. I accidentally put the green washer on the + post. Man ya shoulda seen the sparks fly. Reg; I think the sparkles you saw were in the shine jug:D Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Ya know Don, that might explain why the battery had 4 terminals to choose from:o Quote
oldmopar Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 I also put a set of the washers on my 76 D100 and checked the truck and that had a lot of corrosion also. I will have to check the package maybe I got washers for a chevy or ford and they are not compatible with Mopars If the batteries were still tar cased like the old ones I would just use a few pennies they always worked and only cost a few cents. bob_amos Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 We have seen tham on many of our customers cars. We will leave them on if the customer wanted them there but do not install them ourselves. We find that air flow between the battery cable end and the battery case is improved when these are not installed. Air flow can keep those nasty acid vapors from collecting causing that blue/white powder, better known as corrosion, from developing. There really is no way to totally avoid this but it seems to help. That is what I was originally taught and still do today in my shop. Of coarse, todays metals within the case are designed to keep vaporizing of the electrolyte to a minimum, but we all know and see the corrosion just the same. So.. that said, I would say not to waste your money as they really do not help. Quote
