james curl Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 One of our car club members bought a 51 bussiness coupe that had the fenton alum head removed, the fellow selling him the car said that he had run the engine with that head on it. The head does not cover the open hole in the top front of the block when installed, what gives? I know that this has been discussed before but I never paid any attention as I do not have this hole in my 41 Dodge engine or my 48 Plymouth engine. My headgasket has this hole in it but it is over a solid block on the outside of the head. This car came with Fenton head, exhaust, and intake plus an Isky cam. The previousy owner said he drove the car all through college and from Florida to Texas before the clutch failed, then he pulled the head to check valves and pistons and never drove it again. I think the Fenton head without the front center hole or bludge in the head would pump all of the water out the hole in the block. Can the hole be plugged? Is it a bypass to the water pump? Tell me how the extra hole in the block is used. How can he use the Fenton head for pre 50's Plymouth engine block on a 51 constant bypass block? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 I agree that it doesn't sound possible to run that head on an engine with the internal water pump bypass, unless it was able to seal the port completely when installed. However if that is the case I would think there would be some sort of problem with the cooling system if the bypass was plugged. If it does plug that port in the block, maybe you can switch to an external bypass water pump? Just a thought... Merle Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 I believe the only difference in the internal and external thermostat by pass systems is the plate behind the water pump. My guess is that the hole in question will be dry as the plate behind the water pump will block off any water flow to it. Pull the water pump and find out where the hole goes to. Quote
james curl Posted December 17, 2006 Author Report Posted December 17, 2006 Thanks Don, I will tell him and he can see where the hole in his waterpump is located. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 On my D-42 the hole goes no where except to the pump backing plate. Pretty much what I thought. Thanks for posting the picture shel. Quote
