Guys,is it possible to bolt a later Mopar overdrive unit to the the back of a 48 Dodge half ton pickup 3-speed floor shift transmission?

Anybody ever tried this? I have the transmission, but I don't have a OD unit to look at and measure to see if it would work.

Thanks for the suggestion Don,but I hate to bother him because I won't buy a rebuilt overdrive unit from him. I just can't afford one. I'm hoping to find one on a junker, and maybe buying it to use. I just don't want to buy one if it won't work.

My understanding is that, at a minimum and at least with regards to the passenger car transmission, you would have to machine the back of the transmission to allow for the reverse shift rod to travel into the O/D to activate the lock out and you also need to create an oil passageway between the two units.

Not sure about the truck transmission, but you can't just bolt on the OD half onto a regular car three speed transmission case. There are a few internal differences, most notably that the reverse shift rail extends from the transmission case into the overdrive case, to operate the reverse lockout mechanism. I suppose if you are crafty, you might be able to make it work, but I doubt if it is a simple bolt on deal. Pete

Thanks, guys. I had no idea the car trans cases were even different. Sounds like more trouble than it would be worth.

Wouldn't you also need the output shaft from the automobile three speed overdrive? Since both transmissions are the same length, a standard non overdrive transmission should have a longer out put shaft than the overdrive transmission.
