Does anyone happen to know the part number for the rear axle bearings and seals? My car is a 49 Plymouth but I would imagine they all used pretty much the same thing over the years. If I can get them at NAPA or Auto Zone this weekend I'll be in luck. I have no gear oil leaking out the hubs so I'm going to leave the inner seals intact. Any opinions?

I used a SKF 2735x & 2780. Inner seal is Federal Mogul 471862. These numbers are what I used in my pickup which I believe crosses over with the cars. However to be 100% certain you should remove your axles and use the number on the bearing that is on there.

I don't have the numbers but I'm sure someone here will. Personally I agree on not messing with the inners unless they are giving you trouble. For one thing, I believe a special puller is needed.

I had some gear oil seepage on my right rear, after the trans rebuild. I cleaned the little vent assembly on top of the axle housing, which seemed not to be blocked anyhow. Then I took a good look at the oil level in the rear end. I found that in an abundance of caution and not paying close attention to the tilt of the driveway I had substantilly overfilled it. I drained it down to the proper level and the seal leak seems to be gone.

P.S. Joe, original Mopar bearings are bullet proof. If they do go bad you can usually detect a rumble, maybe intermittent. Replacement new bearings may be offshore stuff that can't hold a candle to an original bearing that's still good.

Joe, here's what I have in my file for the '49 (P18) rear bearings and seals. I believe they are correct but haven't "ground truthed" each one.

Thanks a lot guys. Normspeed, that's good to know about the original Mopar bearings. I was thinking about pulling the inner and outer drive pinion bearings as well, but according to the manual, there are shims in there that have to do with pinion bearing preload and pinion bearing adjustment. I've never driven this car. In fact, it hasn't been driven in over 25 years, as far as I know. I don't know whether the bearings are good or not but I think that in the case of the pinion bearings I might just leave it alone. If I do get a wild hair up my butt and decide to go ahead and do it, I would just put whatever shims are in there back where I found them.

What I wouldn't do for "Special Tool C-293."
