Jim Shepard
OK, here's one for all you smart-elicks out there. When restored and put back on the road a little over a year ago, my gas gauge worked fine. About a month ago it quit. Well, not quite quit. Now when I fill it up the needle goes to "E" and seems to now work in reverse. As the tank empties, the needle moves steadily toward the half-way point and then stops, never going any closer to "F". What's up?
MBF
I'll have to look in the service manual-there was a test to isolate the sending unit and guage and a way to troubleshoot each. Have you checked that you have a good ground to your tank? Sounds to me like your sending unit could also be acting up, but w/o seeing the manual I can't be sure. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow. mike

Rich Gengo
On most one wire senders is you remove the wire on the sender and ground it the gauge should go to full. If it does the sender is bad or a bad ground. Maybe the float fell off the sender also.
greg g
I would check to make sure that you have a good ground on the sender. If you had nice new paint and fresh fasteners you probably started out by putting a fresh screw through the paint into nice clean metal. Over time, that connection may have built up some corrosion compromising the ground. I had a similar problem with he one in my coupe. It turned out the defroster duct had fallen off the difuser. The duct has a wire stiffining wire in it. As that moved around under the dash the wire would contact one of the posts on the back of the gauge causing a false ground, which made the gauge act much as you describe yours.
