Jims50chrysler Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 First of all I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I was thinking over the holidays I would start to rewire the old car I went throught the schematics and sorted out the gauge and color wire I would require and was planning on picking up what I could tomorrow while I was scouting out a fuse panel I came across this place http://www.ezwiring.com/ and started to think this might be the way to go. I am looking at the ez mini 20 Has anyone used these harnesses before? I did notice that there is only one wire for the for an alternator so I would have to do something for the other wire on the generator. For those of you that have wired your own cars from scratch, what did you do for your fuse panels? Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Jim, they don't look too bad, but the wire is too light if you are still on a 6 volt system. I have done some re-wiring on my coupe, but it is 6 volt, I have used 12 and 14 gauge wire almost through out, and even some 10 gauge for certain items. You could always to a store like Princess Auto, buy all the wire you need in a multitude of colors, get a schematic for your car, then do a wire at a time, solder your terminals and joints, use heat shrink tubes on the joints, buy a universal fuse panel, and wire your circuits through that. I have run in-line fuses to the clock, heater motor, wiper motor, will also do it for the radio and lighter, my lights and some of the other circuits are on terminal breakers. But when I go and redo it all, I may use a fuse panel, and run most of the circuits through the panel. You could also buy a ready made harness for your car, but expect to pay about $700, for the complete harness. I think you should be able to make your own, just organize yourself, go on the search section of this forum and research how others have done this task, get a good schmemaitc to follow.................Fred Quote
Oldguy48 Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 I'm in the process of rewiring my P15 now. Built my own fuse/relay panel, using an 1/8" thick aluminum panel, and fuseholders and terminal strips that are available at Radio Shack. Found the 12 volt relays on E-Bay, and relay connectors from Parts Express. Mine has 10 circuits that are relay controlled/fused, and 10 that are just fused, and has a high current disconnect switch to de-energize everything when the car is stored. Converting the car to 12 volt, and locating the fuse/relay panel & battery in the trunk. I can use the original headlight switch, ignition switch, etc. to control the relays, since the current that the switches have to handle is very low. The relays do the heavy current switching. Since I've got the headliner removed, I'll route the relay control wires where the original wiring was routed above the doors on the driver's side, using high temperature wire, wrapped with fiberglass tape. I plan to run the power wires under the car, probably thru some PVC tubing, or something similar to give some protection to the wires. Not finished with the rewiring yet, but so far, it's going OK. It's probably overkill, but I tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to electrical stuff. Quote

As rockwood said ezwire is too small if you stay 6v if you go 12v then there kit looks to be the best price. I have a wiring harness from american auto wire for a pending project I think it is a better setup then ezwire but then its about a $100 more. I just finished wiring my 52 cambridge which is staying 6 volt I followed the suggestion of a few members here and purchased wire in spools mostly followed the wiring diagram but did upgrade a few systems to a larger size . Purchased wire at summit and some at napa got the connectors at walmart they had 3m brand at a good price. I guess I spent around a hundred in total. As I am not removing the headliner I rerouted some of the wires through the interior. Ed Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 21, 2007 Author Report Posted December 21, 2007 The re-wiring does not bother me as a matter of fact I kind of enjoy doing it, I have done a few cars before this one. on my 46 ford I took a harness from a 73 to 87 Chevy truck and modified it to fit in worked real good too it had a plug in the firewall to isolate the outside wires from the inside wires and on the inside of that plug was the factory chev truck fuse panel. As mentioned earlier this will not work for my 6 volt system due to the size of the wire. I will end up wiring from scratch and princess auto was store of choice for the wire it sure would be nice to come up with a "factory" looking fuse panel but failing that I will have to make a trip to radio shack. when I do get started I will take some pics to show the progress with the digital camera that I....... my wife is getting for christmas:) Jim Quote
Heavy Flat Head Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Jim you can get a OEM GM FUSE BOX With Fuses & Relays Includes: 6 Maxi Fuses, 30 ATM fuses , 4 Mini Relays, 2 Full Size Relays, & Cover $19.95 each http://www.sherco-auto.com/ I ran across this the other day and figured it would work good for fuse block for our cars. It would be better if it was from Chrysler but I have a hard time turning down what looks like a good deal. Ed. Quote
