Thought this would be useful information for doing the rear axle seals.   The stock seal retainer can be opened like a can on the outer side of the retainer.  If you try this on the inboard side of the seal retainer you will find dimples that should be left alone to keep the retainer concentric as possible.    Measure the I.d. and o.d. needed for the seal and save quite a bit of money

Yes I marked it and cut the top off. somewhat carefully.  Then the old seal came out, followed by big fat washers that were resting against the dimples on the inboard side of the seal retainer.    I didn't put the big washers back in to the seal retainer.   I'm confident it should work fairly well having only grease in the outboard bearing cavity.

My nephew did the measuring and ordering a while back I'll have to take a look next time the drums are off. 

 

Vernier calipers and a seal list (pick a manufacture) by size can get you close enough to find a seal.

This is really interesting and could help lots of people with the same upgrade. Do you have some pics and more details of what you did and how you did it?
