steveplym Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Or something that can verify the casting number on the rods I have. The number that is on these rods is 954371. Just need to verify these are 218 rods. Thanks in advance for any help. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 what are the lengths center to center...230 are 7 13/16 and the 218 are 7 15/16 I believe the number you posted is a casting number..as the part numbers will not match... Quote
steveplym Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 That is the casting number. I was hoping to check the casting number to see if it was a 218. I will have to measure the rods to make sure. The number on my block is a P-15 serial number. Casting date is 10-8-46. This has to be an original 218. Only thing is somebody might have swapped out the crank and rods from a 230, but I doubt it. P-15 would only have 218's right and not 230's? That is Dodges only for those years? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 just so happens since the last time this was discussed I picked up a 218 engine with one rod and piston still inside...the casting number does in fact match your number 954371 this engine is stamped P15 so 218 is correct block.. For those with no calipers or depth guages etc..this is a quick check you can take your rod..split it at the big end and set on a straight edge..insert the wrist pin..using a good machinist rule you will read closest to 7.5 to the bottom of the wrist pin..the wrist pin is (by the one Ihave here) .860 so you can add .430 to your 7.5 inch and you have 7.930.which is .0075 off from the actual center to center..given the difference in the rod is .125 longer than the 230 so it is a quick check also...remember you are not using precision instruments here.. 230 rod should read in same manner approx 7.375 to bottom of wrist pin to straight edge across the split big end. remember..quick check..will tell you right fst what you have...
