Decoding body number

So today I got the 48 Dodge Biz Coupe to start!  I've had it for a year but from what I know it's been at least 10 or 15 since its been running.  And 15 or 20 since its been on the road.

Today while I was scratching my head about why it was running rough, I noticed this plate on the firewall with the number 260477BC. Can anyone point me out as to how to interpret these numbers? I assume it's the body style and colour and such.  I know it was built in the California plant late 47 and rolled out for the 48 year.

I do not have any records that correspond to the numbers you have. I would think the BC references the Business Coupe but that doesn't relate to the Chrysler / Dodge / Plymouth coding system of D24 etc. As far as body style, color etc. your car's Canadian cousin has a plate identifying each component located on the firewall above the brake / clutch linkages. I am not sure if you have access to alternate light sources or not but maybe a nearby university or college might have a lab that would take a look to see if any subsurface writing becomes visible with the various colors??? Might be worth a try for both plates.  Good luck.  Dave

Swanny,

The plate that you have been examining on your '48 Dodge is referred to as the "Body Serial Number Plate". That is all that it is - just the serial number of the body. There is no reference to the Car Serial (often called the VIN) Number, the Engine Number, or anything else.

Dodge Division calls the D-24 Business Coupe a "Dodge De Luxe Three-Passenger Coupe".

I believe that your Body Serial Plate actually reads "26044TPC". The "TPC" stands for Three Passenger Coupe. Your '48 D-24 was assembled in Los Angeles CA.

My California built '49 Dodge Business Coupe was assembled in San Leandro CA during early '49. It's Body Serial Number is "27536TPC". It's a very late production vehicle, as the last D-24 Business Coupe's Body Number was "27600TPC"!

It should be noted, that all the California assembled D-24 Business Coupe's bodies were made in the Detroit area, and shipped to the west coast.
