tankwilson Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Was wondering through a junkyard today that i knew had 4 49 plymouths. Mosts of them were bad but did have some good sheetmetal, couple of fulton visors and one had a flathead 6 with a spitfire head on it. Is the spitfire head any better than stock. Thought about putting on my car just for looks but, my engine runs great and i am almost afraid if it mess with it I might cause my self more trouble than it is worth. Any performance gains with spitfire head??? Any chance developing trouble if i change it?? Thanks matt wilson king pin customs Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 If you have a 49 plymouth engine in your car, it won't fit. I think spitfire heads are for the 25" block. Quote
claybill Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 hey tank....the spitfire was for the longer block motor...howevr...! check out how that engine was installed in the 49 . there must be some changes around the radiator shrowd area to deal with the excess length....i plan on this change myself someday...i wish i knew where it was, so i could see it..could use parts and info. i am up near dubuque. i have been thru mt pleasant and fairfield a few imes.. claybill Quote
claybill Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 but to answer your question..other than it belongs to a motor that doesnt fit your car......spitfire was the engine name, they cast it in the head..the head looks cool, but is the same as stock for a 25" motor....but yours is 99.9% a 23 in block. and i am looking for a spitfire motor locally. any info will help claybill claybill@galenalink.com Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Spitfire heads are a Crashler long block only thing. Desoto, Dodge, and Plymouth did not have them factory installed. There is no advantage horse power wise to having a Spitfire head. As has been mentioned it would be interesting to see this long block installation in a US made Dodge. Caniadian manufactured Mopars with a flathead 6 all had long blocks. Quote
woodscavenger Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 It sure looks cool. I think its like a kid with new tenny runners. It must make the car go faster just because it looks so cool. Quote
Reg Evans Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Hey...you should check the engine number. It might be a 265 and the head may have been milled already for higher compression. Quote
