Spin off oil filters

Hello all. This may seem like a trivial question but I would like some more information before I procede. I am looking to install a spin off oil filter on my p20 flat six. I have looked at a couple of products and have decided that the bee hive container is not the one I am looking for. Summit has one for SBC for $75 it comes with lines. What size filter should I run for this engine?

Thanks

Justin

Hi Justin,

Go to a NAPA store and have them look up a filter adapter for a tractor with a bypass filter system. I don't have the part numbers with me right now but I can get them in the morning. It is a nice aluminum piece and takes a NAPA filter with a small hole for a bypass system. Otherwise you will have to convert to a full flow system. If you don't and put a regular filter on you will lose all of your oil pressure.

I bought a spin off adapter from J C Whitney 20 years ago for my 55 Chevrolet pick up which is partial flow same as flat head Plymouth. You use the same inlet and out let holes in the block to plumb the new adapter. I use Wix filters for a Ford, Fram PH-8 equivalent and have not had any oil pressure issues in all these years.

Justin,

I must have thrown away the box for the adapter. The filter number is 1051. I will check with my buddy at NAPA tomorrow for the adapter part number.

Sorry for the delay,

Dan

Hi Justin,

I have a FlatAttack filter on my flatty, and it's a "beehive" look can with a regular filter inside, plumbed to the same ports as the old cannister filter.

Works just fine, I have 50-55 psi oil pressure regardless of engine rpm or temp.

The bypass relief spring controls the pressure, not the oil filter... and allows a portion of the oil to be diverted to the oil filter. After it passes through the filter, it is returned to the oil galley in the block. The biggest difference is the filter itself. Bypass filters will filter smaller particulates than fill flow filters.

Here is the base and filter if these pictures post correctly. The base is NAPA part number 4755 (online price of 33.59) and takes 3 different filters. I bought the 1051. The hole is tiny in this filter as compared to full flow filters as you can hopefully see in the picture. If I am wrong about the bypass pressure I will gladly stand corrected. I was talking to a guy that related his story about his bypass filtered tractor losing pressure when he put a full flow filter on it. It probably didn't have a bypass spring-loaded valve in the block but used the filter restriction to boost the pressure. We all know what happens when we assume and I sure did. :o000_0009.jpg000_0012.jpg
