Jim Yergin Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 I am replacing the valve guides in the 230 motor I am building. I used an air impact gun and a valve guide driver to remove the old guides and install the exhaust valve guides. However, on the intake valve guides, the driver cracked the rim of the guide. Does anyone have any tips on how to install the intake guides without damaging them? Thanks. Jim Yergin Quote
greg g Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 Are the intakes the ones that go in with the rounded end pointing up???? Could you press them down with alot of assembly lube and a big "C" clamp using a small socket as an isolator between the guide and the foot of the clamp???? From the tech tips on the Home page; Installing Valve Guides If you are doing a valve job or full overhaul of your flathead six pay close attention to how the valve guides are re-installed. In the factory service manual a one liner warns exhaust valve guides are mounted reverse from the intakes valve guides (P15 Service Manual. Page 149. It is not even mentioned in the D24 Service Manual !). For exhaust valves install the counterbored ends upward. This provides better heat shielding. Intake guides are mounted counterbore down. Most machine shops are not familiar with these engines anymore and you need to warn them about the correct installation procedure. Quote
bob westphal Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 Most good shops know enough to heat the block and to freeze the guides just prior to instalation. This process makes press fitting much easier. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted September 7, 2007 Author Report Posted September 7, 2007 Greg, The intakes are installed with the tapered end down. Bob, Thanks very much for that tip on heating and freezing. I did not run across that in any of the rebuild references I read or the information I got from VPW when I asked for any tips. I will give that a try. Jim Yergin Quote
Jim Yergin Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 Bob, The freezing and heating tip worked like a charm. Thank you very much. Jim Yergin Quote
