I was just wondering

1. If anyone would know where I could find the numbers for my transmission would be. I have a 4 speed for 1956 Fargo

2. How big of a motor could I put in my truck with that transmission. Like I have a 251 in there now. Could I put a V8 into the truck with out changing the transmission.

3. Plus would anyone know what type of transmission a 4 speed would be.

I'll let others opine on the trans questions, but as to a v8 swap, Yes it can be done and yes you can use the existing 4spd.

The limiting factors on the v8 will be finding a v8 truck bell and then using a pre-62 A engine or EarlyHemi.

It is possible that your existing bellhousing is made for both the L6 and V8. Look to see if it has the needed circular bolt pattern.

If you use the poly or hemi engines, they will bolt up to the 54-56 V8 or du pattern housing and mount in the stock location  on the cross member. The front mou ts can be found if you look around or you can fabricate a set.

The large truck 4 speed should bolt to the housing. However, as I have found once you have the V8, your going to want to upgrade to an overdrive of some sort. There is info on the board regarding the T5, A833 or even 700R4.
