jmooner3 Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 Guys - I searched and can't find thread or pics... My truck came to me with a seized desoto engine in it... It was a 25" block and the rad had been moved forward and welded into the front clip. I've got the correct 23" engine and want to put the rad back where it goes. I'm thinking if it even holds coolant it may not always and I'd need to unbolt it and get it patched at some point... Seems easier to cut the welds and pull the rad now while the clip is off. I'm looking at the rad and the mounting area and the holes don't look like they line up. Wondering if one of you fine folks could snap a pic of your radiator and how it's mounted into your truck... anyone with a front clip off the rig might be the best / easiest angle for a pic. Thanks in advance! J Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 unless the number on the readiator matches the factory number, how can you be sure the radiator is even for that vehicle originally....someone here may be able to help with that number. Second, as you are taking out a radiator that has been welded in place, simply position it for the factory holes that are still on the radiator support, mark and drill these, weld up anything extra....attack and conquer... jmooner3 Posted June 4, 2017 Author Report Posted June 4, 2017 Agreed - I know I can make it fit, aint afraid to weld or fit it in, I'm just thinking getting it close to where it's supposed to go would save me time later on. With the clip off the truck I've just got to do some figuring for clearance to the fan. The perch that the rad bracket sits on should give me a good idea of how much space I need. Was just looking for a pic worth 1000 words..I found in another post some numbers 1272945, 1195170, and 1272824. I have to get back out to the truck to have a looksee what it actually in the rig now. It looks like the right dimensions and I found a video that shows it's mounting pretty well https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=yhs-invalid&p=1949+dodge+truck+clip#id=1&vid=a4ace066cb49c52abc77cc5ca45a87e2&action=click Maybe this'll help someone else too.... jmooner3 Posted June 7, 2017 Author Report Posted June 7, 2017 Although the rad in my truck looks period correct the number stamped on it is 1346846U and none of the bolt holes lined up...the fact that it was welded in didn't sit right with me as I figure I will get the clip painted and truck reassembled just in time to have a leaker that I then would need to cut out... I cut it out yesterday and welded a sub bracket to fit it back in - making it serviceable going forward. The flange on this one was just a bit more narrow than the support so no chance to just drill new holes and mount up. As Plymouthy said, how do I know if it's even the correct one for the truck... anyone have a reference for this number( 1346846U )? Just curious. The engine that was in the truck was a desoto so it's possible the donor for the rad was too. Problem conquered. J Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 7, 2017 Report Posted June 7, 2017 lot of folks have cars and trucks that are x equipped when they got them and may have no idea they have been changed and some will defend to the bitter end it is original and correct as it was that way when they got it....some know the difference and will research the gray area to built it back correct...others like the style of the vehicle (else why did you get it?) and strive only to keep it alive and useful as they make it safe and dependable...if every example of an old car was museum quality straight from the showroom when you saw them today...they would be as commonplace boring as the cars on the dealers lot offered today and no museum would want one to display...
