JohnS48plm
My 48 coupe has a p-18 engine in it now. It runs well, I've put about 3000 miles on it in the past 2 years. I found a guy who has a p-15 motor with new rings and bearings. It also has the manifolds, carburetor, starter, generator, fuel pump, and water pump. It's only about 15 miles from my home and he says he'll deliver it. I'm going to go and look at it saturday. Is there anything special I should look for? I know it has a cracked exhaust manifold but I can use the one from my engine. I can pull the pan and plastigage the bearings when I get it home. Normspeed
John, that sure is a pretty coupe in your profile. The motor sounds pretty complete. How much is the man asking? I'd look at the water jacket and thermostat housing with an eye for signs of unusually heavy corrosion, and ask if the gentleman has ever replaced the water distribution tube. The cracked manifold is minor, unless it got cracked from having the motor dropped. Save the pieces for that split exhaust setup.
BobT-47P15
Good advice, Norm......it's kinda tough to tell about an engine you can not hear run. There is a fella here who has a Plym engine, it may actually be from a 1940 model rather than a P15. He wants something like $250 for it. I know the car it came from, but don't really know how it ran when replaced with a V8. Would like to have it for a spare but hate to tie up the money in something I may never use. Already have a 50 Dodge engine sitting around - it was in the car before the current motor. Its not in very good shape, but I figured it was already paid for and might have some part needed later. And if I ever get time and inclination, I might tear it down and try to overhaul it.
Don Coatney
I ran my engine about 10 hours before installing it in my car. Worked out all the bugs while they were easy to get to.
JohnS48plm
The price for the engine was $225 delivered to my garage. He said the water pump was off and I will look at the distribution tube.
JohnS48plm
Looked at the 48 engine today. It had the correct numbers. The man said they had rebuilt it in the car, putting in new bearings and rings after reaming the ridge and honing the cylinder walls. They lapped the valves and put in a new rope main bearing seal. Said it ran well but the rear seal leaked. Lost 2 quarts of oil on a 200 mile drive. So the man found a later 230 cu engine and swapped them. All of the extra parts were with the engine and a new rear main rubber seal. The distribution tube looked clean and the engine looked dirty but in good shape so I bought it. when I get it home it will come apart for a better inspection.
