Billy6 Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 I have found an overdrive transmission claimed to be out of a 36 or 37 Plymouth. It has the bell housing. Would this be a bolt-in for my 1940 Plymouth 201 ci ? thanks in advance! Quote
dpollo Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 No. It may fit the bell housing but is shorter than the 40. and has the floor shifter. The R10 is your best choice for the 40. bolt for bolt swap, Quote
Billy6 Posted December 23, 2016 Author Report Posted December 23, 2016 Thanks dpollo. Never thought of the floor shift issue. I'll look for an R10. That was the mid '50s Plymouth overdrive I believe. Quote
dpollo Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) Yes, The R10 was used from 52 to 56 but there is an earlier R8 (I think) which was used mostly in Chrysler in 40 and it will do the job. I think someone with a mid 30's Plymouth may be keen to get the trans you have. The downside to that unit, unless it is a 39 is that it has noelectric kick down feature. Billy6 Posted December 23, 2016 Author Report Posted December 23, 2016 The 36to38 overdrive unit is still for sale in a local "want-advertiser". For $245. It is the non-electric version. Anyone who wants that info let me know. Now I am looking for an R10. Any out there? Quote
Plymouth#43 Posted December 24, 2016 Report Posted December 24, 2016 Hi Billy6 - There is a good article on the various overdrives on the Aok boys blog I suspect if you contacted Tim Kingsbury who writes the blog or George Asche they can help you out on the r10g1 front 1 Quote

Have you found the trans that you were looking for? Quote
Billy6 Posted February 25, 2017 Author Report Posted February 25, 2017 The 36to38 overdrive unit was apparently sold a couple weeks after the above was posted. In any case the person selling it never returned several phone calls. I have not located a unit for my P10. Quote
classiccarjack Posted February 26, 2017 Report Posted February 26, 2017 (edited) For the past 16 years, I have dragged around a OD unit from my 1958 Dodge Truck. One of these days, I will do some measurements to see how compatible it is. The down side is the length. This transmission is really long. Edited February 27, 2017 by classiccarjack Quote
countrytravler Posted July 28, 2017 Report Posted July 28, 2017 Never had a OD in a 30s Plymouth unless it was exported. Quote
