I have a running engine, a non running engine and a spare head. I want to shave one head for more compression and want to make sure I pick the right one. I have verified by block numbers what the blocks are, but who knows if the heads have been changed over the years. After looking at the milling chart, it seems that the later the head, the better the choice. My running engine is a 218 out of an airport tug and marked IND5A, Below is the head. I dont see a date code (if thats what it is) on the industrial head. My non running engine is a 230 that should be the stock engine marked T334, the head has the number of... The spare head I believe came from a 50 Plymouth along with a bunch of other goodies I got... I am guessing I already answered my own question if the date code on those heads are actually a valid identifier... Edited November 24, 2016 by 59bisquik Quote

As I understand it there were minute changes to the combustion chamber shape as the years went on. The later production L6 engines supposedly produced more HP as a result of this and the slight rise in compression ratio. There might even be a different cam profile in this picture? Could be the 55 head would be the best candidate if you are looking for a couple more ponies. Jeff Quote

Long term plans would be to rebuild and cam the 55 230 and use that engine. Short term is to shave the 55 head and toss on my industrial 218. Along with installing my new Offy dual carb intake to compliment my dual exhaust manifold. Quote
