Years back when mine was stock it was a three on the tree it did that mine was the lower mount on the column in the engine bay broke loose I welded it back on and tighten every thing and it worked great for years

It is a floor shift. The clutch starts engaging about 1 1/2 " off the floor.

Not where it engages off the floor but how far down do you have to push the pedal down before you feel resistance? Free play.

If it's a top loader trans...

Possibly a shift cover with weak shift rail springs and worn balls or has worn trans parts internally.

Read your shop manual.
