So we knew there were some "bad" sounds coming from the rear end. We pulled the differential and axles last night to 

diagnose the problem. Looks bad doesn't it? Axle shafts are different lengths and it appears to have gotten water in the 

differential at some point. Anyone ever tackled one of these beast before??

The differential is off set, don't mix up your axles, their supposed to be different. But by the looks of what you have, you need a lot of cleaning and a new gear set and axles, or a whole new diff. I'd look at a Cherokee diff, but sometimes you can't make your driveshaft work with them

Wow, lots of corrosion in there. I'd take a guess and say everything is toast except for the case and carrier. A member here may have a used rear end you could swap in.  Or, as mentioned, upgrade to a "diff" rear end.
