Reg Evans Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 My 38 coupe has suddenly developed a rumbeling sound wheather or not the clutch is in or out and wheather rolling or not. Engine rpm doesn't seem to change the noise. The U joints are tight and the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing only have 2K miles on them. I could use a good used 3 on the floor tranny I guess. Any ideas where I can find one? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 My 38 coupe has suddenly developed a rumbeling sound wheather or not the clutch is in or out and wheather rolling or not. Engine rpm doesn't seem to change the noise. The U joints are tight and the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing only have 2K miles on them. If the trans is in gear with the clutch released, then nothing should be spinning in the transmission. In this situation is the noise still there? If so I'd have to say it's not in the tranny. It seems strange that RPM change does nothing to change the noise, especially if it's a bearing or gear problem. I'd still check any and all clamps, mounts, and etc for loosness just to be sure it's not a vibration related rattle. Although that should change with the RPM too. Maybe you've got a hornet's nest hidden somewhere that's gettin' stirred up when you drive. Merle Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 15, 2007 Author Report Posted June 15, 2007 Hold the phone !!! Stop crating up your old trannys !!! I just went out in the garage and started looking at the engine. A few days ago the generator started squealing so I changed to another genny. The squealing went away and the water pump pulley felt fine then. This morning the fan and water pump pulley have a lot of slop and are rattling around. As I jiggled it a water leak started. Yahoo !!! Much easier fix than a tranny. I got out the grease gun and put lots of grease in the fitting. The leak stopped and the pulley got tight but I've never had one take so much grease without it coming out somewhere. Must be going into the impeller. Time for a new pump. Thanks Merle ! Quote
