48ratrod Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 Alriight.... Background info I have a '48 Canadian made p15 2 dr sedan. Was having fuel supply issues - gone through the diagnosis and pegged it as a faulty fuel pump. Took the pump out - inspected it - saw a couple of holes in the diaphragms - will order some if I can - but thought I need to get another one anyways - want a currently manufactured with rubber to handle today's fuel . (Having 2 is not so bad anyways) Problem is - I can't identify the pump - every where I go - refer to & access both on this site and through all the service & parts manuals I have (36-54 plymouth/mopar) point me to the glass bowled fuel pump...and that is not what I have. Below you will see a photo: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2pklxmbw4zo78y/2014-08-08%2016.46.02.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/xuxnjzne9h2gsno/2014-08-08%2016.46.18.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/y4uwzo9ei3teh77/2014-08-08%2016.46.45.jpg This is the reference to it in my manual : (Outlines that early model p15s had glass bowl - but the later model ones had a metal cover - no where though does it refer to a model no anywhere though) https://www.dropbox.com/s/tmiwx403q05prid/2014-08-11%2010.38.01.png https://www.dropbox.com/s/u4qee38wctztjgj/2014-08-11%2008.19.00.png I've looked on ebay, the applicable auto supply places on line...everything points to the glass bowl ... I have seen references to AC 588A - but that doesn't seem to yield the correct pump either. The only place I've found that's selling one that looks close - and I've tried to use the photo to glean any info - but haven't found anything yet is at this link that can point me in the right direction. It matches the schematic http://www.autopartsobsolete.com/1938-52-Chrysler-Desoto-Dodge-fuel-pump-588.html Thoughts anyone? Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 The glass bowl pump will work. Pumps are the same for the short block American engines and the long block Canadian engines. On some pumps the contact arm goes below the cam and on some the arm has a 90 degree bend and contacts the side of the cam but both will work. A replacement repair kit can be found at Antique Auto Cellar that has modern rubber that will work with ethanol. Quote
desoto1939 Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 Asdon has stated either pump will work. I prefer to have the glass bowel so you can see when there is sediment in the glass bowel and then you can take the bowel off and cleanout the glass. This is your first line of defense and then also have a fuel filter just before the carb to catch anthing else. Just my two cents. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
