1948 b-1-b with a 50 engine

Our truck temperature climbs way to high.  I have read everything I can find and have decided that I need to pull the welsh plugs and blast the gunk out of the engine.  I have put together a list of parts I think I need.  Could you guys let me know if I have left anything out?  I would like to get everything coming so that we can get to it.

Parts from Andy Bernbaum

WDT $39.50

Whelsh plugs  $15  Napa has them but unsure of the size and quantity.  1 5/8" ?  How many?

Radiator Hose kit  $25

Thermostat $$10

Thermostat gasket $1

Water Pump Gasket  $1.99 NAPA

Am I missing anything?

We will also be changing the exhaust header gaskets and cleaning the motor up a bit.

Already have the header gaskets  Under 10 bucks from NAPA.

Engine decal set $11.50

Engine Paint $21 a can.  What color silver and what brand from NAPA? Got to be cheaper.

Thanks for the input.

Andy

I think I'd try the simple route first.  Check the ignition timing to see where that is at.  If that is ok, try to do a good flushing as you can of the radiator and block through the lower radiator hose and block drain plug and replace the  thermostat.  If that doesn't work help solve the problem I'd pull the water pump and check the pump and water distribution tube.  Also check your radiator for cold spots after it warms up.  You may have areas that are blocked off.   Removing the welch plugs and fishing/flushing the block may also be in the offing. Good luck-hope its something simple.  Mike

I believe you need 5 plugs. I'd check closer at napa too you should be able to get most of your list except the WDT from them. Oh and for me I'd get the POR15 brand engine paint. It seems to be holding up better than the spray stuff I used the time before.

Thanks,

I think I will try those things first.  Then dive into the WDT.
