Mrbrylcreem Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 Hello. I need some help as to removing the slip yoke from my 47. I have undone the four nuts but the yoke does not come out. Do I have to undo the large nut and cotter pin to get the yoke out. Quote
MBF Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) If I remember correctly, removing the 4 nuts will allow the universal flange to be removed from the brake drum. It may have taken a liking to the brake drum so some persuasion may be necessary. I think that center nut only needs to be removed if you're going to take off the tailshaft yoke from the rear of the transmission. Mike Edited May 27, 2014 by MBFowler Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Nope.... You must separate the two parts of the yoke/slip joint by first removing the bolt together style U-joint leaving the yoke on the back of the trans/e-brake drum. A big nut holds this early style yoke to the trans mainshaft. Later ...B2?/B3 transmissions are not like this and the yoke and slip joint can be easily pulled off the back of the trans. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Never noticed that on my 47 Fargo, but I didn't bother pulling the trans or driveshaft before it hit that big scrapyard in the sky Quote
Mrbrylcreem Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 This is a picture of the transmission yoke that is proving difficult to remove. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Remove the cotter pin. Remove the slotted nut. Remove the yoke. Quote
Mrbrylcreem Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 Dodgeb4ya. You don't have a pic of the reverse side of the yoke. Are there slotted groves. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 The backside of the yoke slides into the oil seal at the back of the trans. The yoke ID has I think six spline/ grooves that slide and mate to the transmission output shaft splines. The yoke I pictured is in another building that later tomorrow I could go down to and dig it out to send a pic of it if you really need it. What are you trying to do with this yoke? Bob Quote
Mrbrylcreem Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 I would like to replace the rear transmission oil seal. Plus I also discovered that one of the four nuts and bolts that hold the yoke in place was missing. It was only held on by three for who knows how long. Quote
MBF Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 I stand corrected, it looks like that large center nut does have to come off to get the yoke off the shaft. I don't recall having to do that with my B2D116, but that may be a later design. We should write this stuff down, and the memory (well-mine at least) appears to be losing some of its retention capabilities. Sorry for the misinformation. Mike Quote
