55 Fargo Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Hey all, without starting a "hysteria", when I opened and was browsing in the off topic section about 30 minutes ago, set off my anti-virus software big time. I did an immediate boot scan, 4 infected files. I am not saying this site is virus laden, but I was on this site when this occurred. I am not going back into to Of Topic, so am posting this hear for now. Just a heads up... Quote
P15-D24 Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Did you open a topic in the Off Topics section and download a file or picture to your computer? Just opening a section (I.E., Off Topic) doesn't open any files or download any files. Pretty much only files are image files and they are usually rendered in the picture viewer, not automatically downloaded. If it is a virus I doubt this was the source. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 14, 2014 Author Report Posted March 14, 2014 GTK, I opened the "Off Topic" section scrolled down wioth mouse, and bingo Avast virus interception poped up, I dida boot scan and the 2 Virus files were dealt with. Was this coincidnece, have not idea, but that's exactly how it happended. I had no other tabs or programs running at the same time either...... Quote
TrampSteer Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 AV scanners tend to run in the background. The fact of when it popped up may be asynchronous to the events you are executing. Do you know the names of the files it found and where they were located when found? Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 15, 2014 Author Report Posted March 15, 2014 Hi, while i understand and recognize how scanners work in the background. In this event, it blocked immediately whatever "virus" tried to download onto my computer. I have no idea what on this website, but with all the advertisement, possibly could have been some malware attached, no website is exempt these days.. Quote
P15-D24 Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Ads are from Google Adsense and they are meticulous about scanning them before allowing them to be published. If you see the problem again as TrampSteer mentioned try to get the file name(s) and location and then I can check against the files on the website as possible sources. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 18, 2014 Report Posted March 18, 2014 I just was in the off topic section.......no problems encountered that I could tell. I purposely went over and turned the Microsoft Securities Essentials scan program on before going to OT.; Checked back - and it has not picked up on anything there. Quote
