Jim Roach Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 I am in need of two hubcaps like this. I have five, but the friend of mine that was buffing them told me that two of them were not in good enough shape to buff. Can anyone help? Thanks, Jim Roach Quote
lscrymgeour Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Jim Sorry but I can't help you. I am looking for a good set or even single Fargo hubcaps in good condition. I have a set of four but I would like to get some which are in better shape. Another option that we have is to have the hubcaps restored. Does anyone know how much a restoration costs or if you have any recommendations either in Canada or the US? I like your rims. I just got mine back from having them blasted and powdercoated. I went with black which was an optional colour for the 53's. Lyle Quote
racerboy9 Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 The ones from Roberts Motors are nice but the color is a little too dark. You could repaint with the correct shade of red. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Can't help with the hub caps, but I am curious about how you painted yours. What's the trick? Quote
grey beard Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Hi Jim, I suppose you know that Roberts carries this hub cap in a pretty fair repro for $60, if you can't find the real thing. Also, if you still need 5 lug 16-inch rims, I have found two more in nice shape for $35 eachl One of the pair has one cap clip broken. Let me know. Regards Quote
Jim Roach Posted May 31, 2007 Author Report Posted May 31, 2007 Jim, I can't help you with the painting technique. My friend who buffed them also painted them, and he's not talking. Trade secret you know. They did turn out very nice. A while ago I checked with Roberts and if I recall correctly, they told me they couldn't get these any more. I'll check again. Thanks, Jim Roach Quote
Guest nativespuds Posted June 11, 2007 Report Posted June 11, 2007 I have a 49 that I am going to street rod. It is very clean and has 5 or 6 hubcaps. There are two different styles on my truck I know that I have a couple like you are looking for but I'll have to check there quality. If there good what are they worth? Kevin Quote
Guest Larry Blodgett Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 You might try painting the recessed areas and then buffing off the paint off the chrome high spots. I restored my control knobs by painting them black, then painting the recessed titles (head, panel, clutch, etc.) and then dipping my thumb in laquer thinner and quickly wiping my thumb accross the area removing only the surface paint of the white. I tried a rag but that ended up taking off all of the paint including the recessed areas so that's when I tried my thumb and it seemed to work ok. Not exactly sure how it would work on a larger surface. Good Luck. Larry B. Quote
Jim Gaspard Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Suddenly I'm in a hubcap quest. I have 8 that I need to clean up and repaint for my driver and frame-off. In doing research I came across this 2007 post, so I thought it best to pose my questions here. Are our OEM hubcaps (like shown in this string) chrome or stainless steel? One re-chrome shop I called said they thought old Dodge truck hubcaps had a stainless steel outer cap which will not chome well. If so, I would seek out a good polishing shop. Any insight from the forum would be appreciated. Jim in Dallas Quote
Jim Roach Posted May 8, 2009 Author Report Posted May 8, 2009 Jim, In my search I actually found both. The pics above are mine that I had polished. I found a few more that I brought to the same guy that polished these. That's when I found out they were chrome because he wasn't able to polish them. The key is to look for rust on the outer skin, no rust would probably mean stainless. Good luck. Jim Quote
Willis Pingel Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 Hi all.Was just wondering what truck these hub caps come off of? Quote
