Guest 50Plymouth Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 This does not directly relate to our beloved mopar's, but a distant once- bought cousin. I am desperate for help with my 1963 Rambler Classic. (yes, I am an AMC fan) Here's the dish: This wonderfully solid car had a stuck 196ci 6cyl stock engine I then removed. I have a rebuilt 196 cast iron OHV from '62 or earlier that was not designed for side engine mounts like the previous engine in the car was (I got it for a great price but of course its not an instant drop in) . I assume maybe it had some kind of transmission mount? Different cross member all together? Anyway, I've got a guy that is willing to do the machining but we're looking for more information first. (I will happily add pictures of the two blocks an all here if it would help at all). On one side of the new block there is the same flange as the old that can easily accommodate two holes for the stock mount. However, the other side of the new block does not have the bolts coming out around the oil pump that the mount hooked too. (definitely need pictures here). I'd love to get this thing done and out of the way. Ryan (who's wanting to get this Rambler a 'rumblin.. while the Plymouth work progresses) Quote
PatS.... Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Maybe a front mount similar to the Mopar would work. I had a 1958 Rambler automatic that we put an engine in from a '59 Rambler standard that had a turning on the flywheel that the automatic didn't We spent 4 days and about 50 hacksaw blades cutting that durned thing off! The old 58 lasted quite a few years after that between my Dad, brother and I. Good cars. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Ryan, You might want to do a web search. I know a few years ago when surfing the web I found at least a couple of different AMC Rambler sites. Don't remember their web address or even the names of the sites, but they are (or at least were) out there. Maybe one of those can be of some help, especially if they have a forum set up on one of them. Also go the forums on Hemmings http://www.hemmings.com. Maybe they have an AMC forum there too. Quote
Guest 50Plymouth Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Yeah, I had a favorite amc forum that offered good technical advice but it recently shut down.I found another but its a different crowd and atmosphere somewhat. Here are some pictures of the different blocks in case it ends up helping someone help me somehow The old block drvr. side mount area (didn't include brackets that go from block to cross member obviously): The old block pass. mount area: New block driver side mount area: New Block pass. mount area: As I said earlier I can't even tell where\how this new block mounted. I shrunk these pictures all below 80k so I may as well show the whole thing: No mount hiding up front here either .. Ideas? As you can see drilling holes on the flange area for the driver side is not a prob. But I am lacking those nice large studs on the pass. side of the new block. The welder\machinist is great at what he does but wanted to hear ideas first. Ryan Quote
Guest 50Plymouth Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 Bttt. I'm desperate, my amc forums has been silent of late, does anybody know anything about block welding in general? Can mounting studs be realistically welded to a cast iron block? Quote
greg g Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 design and cut a plate that would attach to the bolts holding the timing cover to the block. Looks like there are two that go through the block casting, if there are two on the other side, you could attach plates. Then make something to fasten to the sub frame to attach the plates to. Quote
