J.R. Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 We just picked up a chopped 50 windsor project that runs and drives. It has the 251 and what I think is the 3 speed. The shift pattern is... Back and up - reverese Forward and up - 1st Forward and down - 2nd Neutral and clutch, heae a faint click - 3rd The thing I am wonderring is that the wires coming up from the trans to the relay on the pass side fenderwell and the wires to the switch on the top pass side of the carb are not hooked up. Could this actually be a 4 speed? Also I am rewireing it with a new harness to 12v, how should I go about hooking up the trans/carb wires for the 12v swap? Quote
J.R. Posted May 20, 2013 Author Report Posted May 20, 2013 As is it runs awesome and rolls down the freeway at 65 with no problems. Quote
greg g Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 The M6 was a semi auto dual range with 2 speeds in each range. So your pattern represents away and up low range, away and down high range. Low range is for pulling your house off its foundation and not really useable for on road driving. Although some fancy chifting technique will allow you to hold one of the gears for "spirited getaway acceleration". My buddy had a Desoto and used to do something starting in low range then manually changing to high, the putting the lever back ito low range, to hold a gear, but other than a bit more engine noise it seemed to be inffectual with regard to velocity.
