alteredpilot Posted October 15, 2012 Report Posted October 15, 2012 so i picked up a 48 plymouth club coupe on saturday which had been 'customized' probably somewhere in the early 90's. as part of the process, the guy who built the car molded in side pipes, as well as removed the bumpers and filled the rear between the fenders. i need to fix it. so if anyone can provide a profile pic of the outer rockers without the stainless trim attached as well as a close up of the area where the rocker meets the front fender. also, if anyone has a pic with the rear bumper and valence removed and possibly a measurement of the depth of the small panel under the trunk. thanks in advance! alteredpilot Posted October 17, 2012 Author Report Posted October 17, 2012 (edited) thanks for the pics. i'm not sure if they help or not:o my rear fenders are removable and the rears in the pic seem molded. nit sure if thats factory or custom as i'm still learning these models. here's a pic of mine. before i bought it, the car had lakes pipes molded in to the rockers, which the guy i bought it from removed. what i cant determine is if the rockers have been trimmed, or if the section up against the front fenders is part of the molded section. in the pics below, the rockers are flush with the lower edge of both the front and rear fenders, you can see in mine they are not. however after inspection, mine dont appear modified, unless they did a REAL good job of it. anyone? greg g Posted October 17, 2012 Report Posted October 17, 2012 (edited) the fenders are seperate and should be mounted witha piece of welting between them and the fender. The factory had a stainless bead running the length of the fender. Building the compound curve to fit along the rocker is a delicat job. Lots of folks have gone to standard vinyl welting that is commonly available. The British car places that sell the stuff for Austin Healy triumph, sell one with a beas that is slightly smaller and easier to deal with. the front fenders do not have welting they have 8 or so pieces of anti squeek, between the retaining bolts. alteredpilot Posted October 17, 2012 Author Report Posted October 17, 2012 so as luck would have it, i found a bone stock 48 sitting at a used car lot near my shop. so i went and crawled around underneath is. my rockers are stock and i just need to remove the bit behind the front fender to return it to its proper state. apparently the stainless trim actually hangs below the lower edge of the rocker which visually ties the front and rear fenders together and eliminates the somewhat awkward void created by the shape of the rocker panel.
