christjazz1 Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 When I bought my 48 Dodge Club Coupe, she had an air cleaner sitting on top of the carb, but i now know it is not correct(too large). Can anyone suggest a paper filter/housing that will fit my stock single barrel carb? Thanks for the help, Mike Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 The stock oil bath air cleaner is quite large and heavy. It is made to fit onto the tapered top of the carb. I don't know any other air filter that is made to fit that carb. The oil bath is an efficient filter, seldom requires service, and will last the life of the car. I don't know why anyone would want to change it for a cheap paper filter. Quote
Robert Horne Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 For my 48 Dodge, I make an air filter using a cookie tin, and an air filter I had in my workshop. Later I would clean and repaint my original oil bath assembly. Quote
desoto1939 Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 I found a Paper filter at my local NAPA dealer that was a perfect fit. I took the old original copper mesh unit out of the housing and dropped in the new paper element. It was my choice to change the filter to paper just for the eaz of use and not having to deal with the oil bath element. When going to shows I just change back the the original if needed. When our cars where first on the roads most the roads were tar and chip and we also had alot of dirt roads in the US. The use of the oil bath filter was a perfect choice to collect all of the dust particles prior to getting into the engine. Now that we are traveling on modern highways that are paved and not on back country roads og gravel and dirt there is lot less dust that is being drawn into the carb. Again this is a personal choice. Yes the Construction equipment use oil bath filters becasue they are dealing with alot of dust and other contaminents but I feel that our modern cars and antique cars are not dealing with htese same issues. The K&N filters do use an oil in their filters and this is great. Figure 12k miles on a Fram filter for a modern car and you can see when it is dirty just replace the entire unit. This is my thoughts on this but everyone has their opinions and can do what they want with their individual car. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
