scottyv47
spent 2 days with my sander getting nowhere on my hood, went to the hardware store got a wirebrush for my grinder, took 5 hours but she's bare metal now, also picked up a decent used set of aire cushion 3 inch whitewalls today, the whites were repainted with tire paint, but they were only $100, and you cant poke your fingers through them like the ones on my car now
randroid
scottyv47, I notice the dark stains on the metal under the paint and wonder if that what folks are trying to remove with an acid wash? Are you planning to do anything along those lines? I ask only because I have the same stains on mine. -Randy
scottyv47
actualy the dark stains are some kind of rubber like coating thet put under one of the coats of paint, after i stripped it i had to sand all that off with my D.A. because the grinder didn't take it off, and it made a heck of a mess out of my sand paper
Plymouthy Adams
sounds like it may have been conditioned with a spray coat of POR 15...that stuff is murder to work with after the fact..
scottyv47
the last time it was on the road was 87, and the black stuff was under 3 coats of paint before that, i'm guessing it was done in the 60's, don't know if they had por back then, i think it was that stuff like por with the funny name, that they used to put on all the military stuff
Daliant.
Use one of these on your grinder, you'll have the whole hood down to bare metal in about 20 minutes if you take your time. 3M paint and rust stripper wheel:
scottyv47
where can i get it, i still have to do the front fenders, after i spent a week stripping the roof with my d.a., and three days on the hood getting nowhere i switched to a grinder with a cup type wire brush, and it worked alot better than the d.a. but still took a very long time, i'll have to check the local hardware store, home depot and lowes are both 57 miles from my house, so i try not to go unless i have a large list of stuff, you think they have them at walmart, theres one of those 18 miles from me
Thumbtack
Harbor freight and eastwood. Mail order.
Daliant.
You can get them at Home Depot. Your local hardware store and walmart will probably have the stripper wheel that is meant to go on the end of a drill, those work ok but its not as fast as an angle grinder.
