Todd B Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 What numbers on the rear axle tell me what gearing I have? My semi has a 2 speed rear axle and it is geared so low. 60 MPH is wind open screaming. I bought that other 2.5 ton truck last winter and want to find out if the gears are higher and are able to be swapped out. Both trucks are 53's according to the titles but according to that vin number thread they are telling me they are both 52's. I never did understand that. Thanks for any help. Todd B's Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 Both ratios are stamped on the top of the differential case (not the axle housing) by the fill plug. Both #'s like 5.83 and 8.11 will be stamped there. Bob Quote
Todd B Posted April 30, 2012 Author Report Posted April 30, 2012 Both the trucks have a stamp 5.83 on the housing, so much for switching to a higher gear. My wife tells me its an old truck and I need to relax when we are riding, I would relax more if I wouldn't get passed by all the Ford's. She just does not understand. Thank you Bob for the info. Dodgeb4ya Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Listen to your wife-she's right! The Ford drivers are just trying to get home before their truck breaks down again. Bob Quote
