dontknowitall
Hi folk, long time no talk.. but here I am again with a question about fuel sender units. I have 2 used fuel sender units , one has to be screwed down with bolts, the other is locked in with some type of lock ring. I am not sure anymore which one was 6 or 12 volt. question: As I am using the tank with the lock ring sender unit set up i would like to know if there is a 6 volt unit that would fit the lock ring type? Or do I have to modify to fit the bolt on version? Dodge fargo 1950 B2b
Merle Coggins
Sender doesn't know voltage. It is only a resistance device. You only need to worry about voltage at the gauge. Merle
dontknowitall
Great, then it doesnt matter which one I use? Sender doesn't know voltage. It is only a resistance device. You only need to worry about voltage at the gauge. Merle
Merle Coggins
Depends on what the resistance values are between the two. If the resistance is close to the same between the two, both with the float down and up, than they could be interchanged.
GORDON WRIGHT
I am about to wire up my fuel gauge but I have converted to 12 volt. I have been wondering how to go about this, will a 6 volt globe in series with the gauge work? Will a voltage dropper be a better alternative? MBF
If you hook up 12 volts to your guage w/o the proper voltage reducer in line the 12 volts will fry your guage almost immediately. I know this from personal experience. Someone here should have the specs on the resistor that is used specifically for this guage. Like others have said, the sending unit is just a variable resistor and will not know the difference between 6 and 12 volts. Mike
