Adam,

Thanks for the info...but $1200 for all that stuff is WAY to cheep. A properly rebuilt fluid coupling starts at $400 alone and only one place in the US still has the tools to properly cut it open.

The rest of the parts for an M5/6 that wear will run into $500-$1000 range. Then there is the labor.

Sounds more like they cleaned it and did a repair, certainly not a rebuilt unit.

Best, James

Just for everybody's info, James Douglas gave me the name of

Dacco Transmission Parts

741 Dacco Drive

Cookeville, TN 38506

800-443-2226

for rebuilding a fluid drive.

White Post - who resleeves wheel cylinders and does complete restoration as well - recommended NW Transmission in Ohio 800 327-1955.

I called NW and complete rebuilding is $700 and resealing is $345.

Would a a decent used unit be an option. I think Dodgeb4ya, knows a lot about these units and the M5 and M6 trans, I believe He figures these units are almost indestructable.

At any length, I may have some of these FD units kicking around here from 48 Chryslers, not sure what shape there in though...

Yeah, the guy at NW Transmission was very knowledgable and also said these fluid drives were very well built and seemed a little surprised that mine needed rebuilding. Actually, I don't know yet if it does or not, but I'm just checking around in case.

He said a new seal would be more likely the problem a FD would have. He even knew that they changed seal types on the Desotos ( and I guess the other cars as well) during the post war years before the newer '49 models.
