okay, on 3 of the engines I tore down so far, 2 of them had the oiler for the chain altered. one was cut and soldered, the other had the end crushed with a pair of pliers. has anybody else had this? stating to seem like a common thing here...

I put a new timing chain on my 56 engine last year. The chain oiler looked to be in very good shape, but no oil had went through it in along time. Probably why the chained stretched out so quick from the prevous owner.

I know that a common thing to do in the old Chevy 6's was to slightly pinch off the oil returns on the rocker arm shaft. The intent of this was to create addtional oil pressure in the rocker shaft prior to the excess being returned to the pan. I would imagine pinching off the end of the chain oiler would be similar in that it would increase the amount of pressure in the line causing a better spray pattern. The restriction would also very slightly raise oil pressure. Mike

The chain oiler doesn't continually squirt oil. It receives oil only when the front camshaft journal oil hole lines up with the cam bearing hole that supplies oil to the squirt tube. The amount of oil squirt is not much while the engine is running.
