Olddaddy Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 I'm finishing up a build on a 47 Plymouth 218. I went to hang the intake on the block today for painting and noticed all four exhaust/intake bolts are broken off in the intake. Of course they are too deep to grab and take out. I tried drilling them and of course the drill walked off center etcetcetc....So, I need an intake to finish up the job. Anybody got one they can let go for reasonable money? Or, if you need something what would you trade? I'm getting ready to downsize my shop and the great purge is close at hand. After many years saving and saving and saving this stuff it's time to clear out some stuff. Let me know what you have, and what you need for it and we can go from there. Quote
54Illinois Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 Did you check to see how much to have them tapped out? Gotta be cheaper than an intake and shipping... Quote
roadworthy Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I have an extra, let me find it and I'll pm you Quote
roadworthy Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Sorry, mine has broken studs too Quote
Olddaddy Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 Thanks for all the replies and offers to help. I think I will be good on intakes. I am also always looking for exhausts, or just the broken back half of an exhaust for the dumps. I use them to make up the dual exhaust from a stock manifold. See the attached pic. I can use both types. Quote
Harold M Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 If you do a lot of this you can have a machine shop make a guide template to drill thru, would cost very little Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Don't they feed through the intake/exhaust? I have a couple spare 25" motor sets, and they were bolted and nutted? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 25" motors have a better system of a through system using a nut and bolt. The 23" motors have threaded holes in the intake and 4 bolts thread up from through the exhaust manifold. I've never seen an intake that didn't have atleast 1 broken bolt in it. This is probably the easiest way to visually tell the 2 engines apart without measuring. Quote
JerryBrown Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Have you found your intake manifold.... Quote
Olddaddy Posted February 2, 2012 Author Report Posted February 2, 2012 I've got an intake coming, will let you all know how it works out. I'd really like to find some broken exhausts, or dumps off exhausts if anyone has them in their scrap bin. Quote
james curl Posted February 2, 2012 Report Posted February 2, 2012 (edited) When I have split the three that I have done, I used Chevy V8 exhaust manifolds, they are cheap at the swap meets and free at the muffler shops that install headers. I find one that has a curve and shape that I like then use an angle grinder with a cut off blade to remove it from the host. Then I draw around it on the Plymouth manifold where I want it to go then reduce the opening by a 1/4" all around before cutting it out Pre-heat in a propane BBQ then weld with a Nichole cast iron rod and place back in the BBQ pit and slowly reduce the heat then bury it in about 10" of sand wrapped in tin foil and old tee shirts overnight. I have done three and have a 4th ready to do with the heat box removed will get around to it someday, in no hurry. None of them have cracked after welding doing it by this method. The Chevy uses a three bolt flange but the muffler man has a lot of them or you can get one from the auto recyclers, junk yard. Edited February 2, 2012 by james curl addition Quote
