Jeff_DuBois Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Ok, I have a stromberg carb I need to rebuild.(BXVD-3) It looks like mine has a governor on it??. It looks like they put a 1950 engine in my 3/4 ton 49 truck. Is it better to just rebuild this one or get a different one?. Any advice as to what else I can put on this 218 engine or is this one with a govenor prefered?. sorry, clueless in this matter. Quote
wallytoo Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 i don't see a governor on that setup. governors were generally used on the bigger trucks and the powerwagons, not the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks, although if your engine was swapped in, it could have been from a bigger truck. Quote
HanksB3B Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 I'm more familiar with the Carter Ball & Ball carburators. I've heard about Stromberg but I think they are not original equipment and I'm not sure how good/bad they are. Then and Now would be able to give you better advice: http://www.maritimedragracing.com/which_kit_do_you_need.htm and here's another informative site: http://www.classicpreservation.com/carandtruckmainpage.html Good Luck, Hank Quote
Rocket-bob Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I actually have about 3 original carburetors now: a Carter Ball and Ball, a Stromberg BXVD-3, and a Stromberg BXUD-3. All were original equipment on the early 50's Dodge trucks depending on the transmission and model of the truck (like Route Delivery trucks versus the B3Bs or B3Cs. All three are fine carburetors and work just fine. The fuel line on the Strombergs attaches to the passenger side of the carb while the Carter fuel line attaches from the front. Currently I'm running the BXVD-3 and it does just fine but I bought and rebuilt the Carter so I would have an original (for my B3C) when I rebuild the engine this winter. You can buy the rebuild kits for the Carter from NAPA but the Strombergs are harder to find and more expensive. My suggestion would be to rebuild whatever functional carb you have and run with it. Its getting expensive to find a rebuildable old carb and then getting all of the parts in it (like the main jets or accelerator pump springs in the Strombergs or the step up valve and spring in the Carter) as well. Rocket-bob Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Oh, and by the way, there's no governor on that carburetor. Some have dashpots for choke depending, once again, on year and transmission. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 This is what the Dodge truck vacuum operated governers look like on the 1-1/2 tonners on up to 4 ton trucks. Quote
