Needed: A Retro Version Of Windows

Gents,

My DOS-based computer, a spare I was given by my father-in-law, died and there is no way to reinstall the Windows ME it had on it because it's a Getaway and that company is too proprietary to include the original disks. I got the computer because I have a few DOS-based games I like to fool with. So what I need is a copy of Windows prior to NTSF (98 SE was my favorite of that genre). Since the computer won't be connected to the internet and MicroSoft hasn't supported it for years I'm not too worried about stepping on Bill Gates' toes by asking. (A quick aside; is it just me or does anyone else find it odd that he named his company for his private parts?)

I can't pay much other than postage but since the demand for such a program isn't very high perhaps someone has something along those lines laying around.

Thanks,

-Randy

Randy, I might be able to help you with that. I think I have some old OS software laying around. Let me have a look.

Interested in an alternative idea? Depending on what you are trying to do, have you considered installing a version of Linux. It runs with a lot less overhead than WinDoze, is free and contains software for images, word processing, spreadsheets, (will handle all the commercial file versions/extensions) etc. I'm Triple booting my NetBook with JoliCloud, Linux Mint and Windows XP.

JoliCloud is for an older machine that is used to connect to the Intenet. Much of what it runs is 'in the cloud', rather than being dependent on the machines performance.

Linux Mint is one of MANY versions of Linux available, at no charge. Is compatible with a lot of machines. You would probably have to have the Internet available for loading/updating . . . have not tried it on a machine without Internet.

Cheers!

John,

As a matter of fact I've been running Ubuntu for the last six months and it's what you say it is and more. I haven't yet been able to get back where WinXP was before it melted (and took three of my books with it) but I haven't tried very hard either. With winter coming on perhaps I'll be willing to take the time to get in in better order.

An older version of WinDoze (I like that!) is what the old machine needs, though, and if you have one around I'd feel beholden to you for sharing it.

Thanks again.

Randy, can you make do with W95? It's all I've got. I had several copies of W98 (including SE) . . . About two months ago I took a box of stuff to the Teen Challenge that I figured I'd never use again . . .

Cheers!

Gents,

When I first posted this request I wasn't sure what sort of response to expect but once again the forum has come through. Thank you all for the interest and effort; I believe the situation has been resolved.

Uncle-Pekka,

I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. I post some OT messages here and always try to include OT in the topic line but this is one instance I forgot to do so. Maybe that sort of precision mind action on my part is why I need another copy, lol.

At any rate, several members have responded generously and I'll be back in the saddle when the mail arrives.
