Has anyone replaced the stock 4 blade fan with a 6 or 7 blade fan?

Thought about it, getting 1 from a truck.

Are you having low speed overheating issues?

Do not think the bigger fan would help all that much on the freeway/highway speeds....

oddly enough when i went to a 6 blade it made my temp problem worse. i have a 265 in a 54 windsor. flushing the block through the lower freeze plugs and removing the thermostat has helped, but it will still run a little hot at idle if you idle a long time.once you get some speed going it is fine even in real hot weather. capt den

Haven't yet, but it got up on the temp gauge a few times. My thought was (and maybe I am wrong!), more blades, more air through the radiator.

In theory I think you are correct, especially at speeds below 30 mph, but at highway speed, air flow should be at max, and if you are having elevated temps on the highway at higher speeds, then circulation, in rad or blcok could be the culprit.

I find on these flatties, clean rad, clean block, ( where the plugs are pooped out and everything rodded and flushed out, along with the water dist tube.

Timing, can elevate temps, and running without a t/stat can do it too, as the flow is far too quick for the rad to do it's job.....

has anyone tried to add an electrical fan (modern one) so you can switch it on when you need it?

The problem I can think of is they are 12V, and draw a lot of amps. So a small conversion block 6V to 12V will not do.

Folks,

My experience: I once had to drive the D24 180miles without fan blades. It was not hot weather (but warm, +20...25 Celsius). I drove 50...55mph on highway most of the trip with no engine heat issue, very same stable temp as with the blades.

However, when I had to stop in red lights, the temp begun to raise immediately. In speed again, it cooled down. Thus proven, that the fan works for cooling at very slow speed or stop situations.

Yup, fan cools at slow speeds, idling slow speeds, etc.

The rad, water pump, circualtion that is unobstructed for hiher speed cruising and cooling....

Been done by a few members, one is Don Coatney, not sure if he has a manual or temp sensing switch for his 12 volt fan.

They do sell 6 volt electric fans, maybe someone can give us an update, on how well they work...
