Normspeed Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I'm still in the dial up stone age, but I can manage uploading or downloading a photo or 3 no problem. But for me, there are maybe 3 current threads that are really loaded with photos and just too slow to load on dialup. I don't hit those once I know they're big downloads. Problem is, if I accidentally hit one I can't stop the slow page load or move forward or back until the page fully loads. It locks up the machine maybe for several minutes. To get to the point it would help if the topic mentioned the large download. Someone recently posted a thread that said (no dialups) and it was greatly appreciated! Quote
Lee Exline Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 If you want to look at the subject of my thread you were talking about that said (no dialup) click on the link below. It is a collection of Desoto's that will be for sale this summer! Didn't mean to leave you out of the loop or in download hell. Binder Desoto collection It has a lot of images but they are thumbs so it should even work well on dialup. That page leads to 36 other subpages with more thumbs so your dial up should be able to handle it. If you want to see any of the bigger pictures on the subpages they will only be one at a time and still should load in a reasonable amount of time. Quote
Guest 50Plymouth Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Good idea.. any suggested ideas for a new (or already used in other forums) abbreviation that can be added into title? maybe I'll just add "-photo heavy" I lived on dial-up for 11+ years. You forget very quickly once\when you go broadband. this may not be the ideal solution you are looking for - but if you really, really want to see a particular heavy-image-laden thread you could always go into the options of your preferred browser and turn off the images temporarily perhaps. TodFitch Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I'm still in the dial up stone age, . . . Problem is, if I accidentally hit one I can't stop the slow page load or move forward or back until the page fully loads. It locks up the machine maybe for several minutes. . . What browser/operating system are you using that doesn't have a "stop" button on it? Quote
Normspeed Posted April 6, 2007 Author Report Posted April 6, 2007 Year old Dell with Windows XP Home. There's a stop button but if I've already begun loading the page the stop button doesn't stop the process. I run into it on any forum where large file photos are attached to posts. Once in the lockup, the only way other than waiting it out is to exit out of my browser and restart the machine. Oh, and Netzero ISP software. Could be part of it maybe. Anyone else on dialup running into this? Or, maybe I'm the last guy in the world still on dialup (sob) Quote
rearview Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Isn't netzero software just modified IE? If so, you can go to Tools> Interent Options> Advanced then go to the "Multimedia section". Uncheck "show pictures" Problem solved. Bob Quote
DutchEdwin Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 that's why I make my picture with a printscreen, using a free tool from http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/ (at the right bottom in the site). I simply hit the printscreen button and draw a rectangular on the screen of what I want to post. Sometimes it is only 4k. You can adjust it how large you want it to be. In this way I think even the dail up has no problem, although the quality is still good. Try my post on the gearbox from today. It has 5 pics in them, made that way. Norm, let me know if it is still "quick" enough for you. Quote
Normspeed Posted April 9, 2007 Author Report Posted April 9, 2007 Hi Dutch, your photos are shown as thumbnails, they load fast and I can click them to see a larger copy. No problems there. It's the large photos embedded in some posts, sometimes larger than my monitor screen, that seem to slow things down. The more I think about it, there's no real way for the author of a new post to know what will be contained in replies, so putting a note in the title wouldn't help. So, I'll just try to remember which posts took a long time to load and not hit on those again. Quote
